Reports to : Controller
Summary : The Staff Accountant plays a critical role in maintaining the financial health and transparency of the nonprofit organization. This position is responsible for managing daily accounting tasks, ensuring compliance with nonprofit financial regulations, and supporting the organization’s mission by maintaining accurate financial records.
FLSA Status : Exempt
Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management :
Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts.
Compliance and Reporting :
Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit-specific accounting standards.
Assist with audits by preparing schedules and providing documentation.
Prepare and file tax forms, including IRS Form 1099, and other compliance-related documents.
Grant and Fund Management :
Track and manage restricted and unrestricted funds.
Prepare financial reports for grants, ensuring compliance with funder requirements.
Monitor grant budgets and expenditures to prevent overspending.
Process Improvement :
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and workflows.
Assist in implementing and maintaining accounting software and tools.
Assist with implementing and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures to safeguard organizational assets and ensure accurate reporting.
Investment Reconciliations :
Perform detailed reconciliations of investment accounts, ensuring accuracy and resolving discrepancies.
Monitor and track investment transactions, including purchases, sales, dividends, and interest income.
Maintain records of investment portfolios and prepare related schedules.
Team Collaboration :
Collaborate with program and development teams to provide financial insights and support.
Respond to financial inquiries from staff, funders, and external partners.
Requirements :
Qualifications and Essential Skills
The ability to work well independently on several projects concurrently, and possess excellent communication, organizational, and creative thinking skills.
Software proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent experience
2 years’ experience in general accounting
Knowledge of accounting principles and practices
Knowledge of financial reporting
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent problem-solving skills
Able to multi-task and prioritize work, organizational and prioritizing skills; problem-solving and organizational skills; attention to detail is imperative
Demonstrated high energy level and flexibility, pleasant persona coupled with sound judgment; flexible, discreet, and able to maintain confidential information, knowledge of correct protocol for specific situations.
Ability to move, learn, and think quickly; skilled at operating with a sense of urgency, but not recklessly.
Ability to collaborate across departments as a team player.
Supervisory Responsibility :
This position has no supervisory responsibilities
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :
Extensive use of telephone and computer throughout the workday.
Sits, reaches, walks, climbs, and lifts intermittently throughout the workday so the requirements of this position can be fully met.
Communicates using the English language.
Sees and hears or uses prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
Able to lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, etc., of twenty-five (25) pounds throughout the workday.
