Position Description : The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Spelman College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek an outstanding teacher / scholar whose area of specialization is African American Religions with subfields including (but not limited to) womanist theology / ethics, African religious traditions in the diaspora, queer studies in religion, decolonial studies in religion, and / or science and religion. We are also interested in candidates who bring methodological expertise and the ability to develop innovative new courses in any of the following : digital and spatial humanities, qualitative data analysis, ethnography, or archival research. We are interested in candidates dedicated to excellence in teaching and scholarship with ability to contribute effectively to undergraduate advising, mentoring, assist in curriculum development and assessment, and provide service to the department and College, as well as be active in scholarly, creative, and / or research productivity appropriate to a liberal arts environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to social justice through their teaching and research. The candidate must be able to teach core religious studies courses, such as Introduction to the Study of Religion, Theory and Methods in Religious Studies, and Senior Projects, as well as upper-level religious studies elective courses in their area of specialization. The candidate will also rotate among department faculty to teach Theory and Methods in Religious Studies and the Senior Projects capstone course, which are requirements for all majors. All courses will be taught in-person. The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies offers two majors : Philosophy and Religious Studies. Thus, while the successful candidate will hold a PhD in religious studies, they must also be comfortable operating at the intersection of philosophy and religious studies. The position will begin August 2025. The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. by the time of the appointment. Qualifications : PhD in Religion or a closely related field such as History of Religions; applicants who are ABD and on track to complete their PhD by August 1, 2025, are encouraged to apply; however, PhD must be completed by August 2025 to be eligible for employment.
