Community Engagement Teaching Artists (TAs) teach exceptional arts education classes for Chicago Public Schools (CPS) through in-school programming. TAs are adaptable, demonstrate knowledge and preparedness, care about all students, and create a joyful atmosphere. TAs provide instruction in multiple styles of dance including ballet, contemporary, hip hop, jazz, and Latin. TAs offer highly structured dance experiences, encouraging students to develop technique, creativity, and life skills.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include but are not limited to the following. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
Instruction :
Plan and provide class material culturally relevant and appropriate for the age level.
Facilitate student development of lifelong learning skills including self-discipline and confidence.
Support students by creating a safe, student-centered environment.
Utilize critical thinking and problem solving to engage students, schools, families, and communities.
Teach in school spaces without traditional dance studios such as gymnasiums, auditoriums, and classrooms.
Be prepared for each instructional setting, for example, bring a portable speaker to play music for class.
Choreograph dances for students to perform in school assemblies.
Maintain constant and clear communication with the school coordinator and the Joffrey, through email, text, or phone.
Complete paperwork for assigned classes, including bi-weekly progress reports and annual assessments.
Stay informed of best practices for classroom management and arts education.
Administrative :
Attend Pre- Mid- and Post-TA Workshops and trainings.
Attend Program-specific meetings as needed.
Complete required Joffrey training, such as harassment prevention and bystander intervention trainings.
Complete annual evaluation with Director or Program Supervisor.
Overall :
Stay up to date on the Joffrey as a whole by engaging with available resources (i.e. In The News, Employee Portal).
Travel and arrive on time to various Chicago Public Schools for instruction before, during, or after school.
Demonstrate consistent involvement and a continuous dedication to expanding inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility at the Joffrey.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE :
A high school diploma is required. Professional dance experience plus an undergraduate degree or equivalent skill and experience required.
Experience teaching and choreographing dances that engage and challenge students PreK-12.
Strong communication and time-management skills and high emotional intelligence.
Effectively teach and address learning needs across gender, age, race, ability, socio-economic and cultural diversity.
Ability to command a room and engage students, while modeling ideal behavior.
Embody exemplary professional conduct and respect for school and community culture.
Demonstrate expertise in dance technique that adheres to state and local standards.
Think creatively to problem solve and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
Consistently assess student learning and self-reflect on personal contribution to program effectiveness.
Regularly explore skill development to grow as an artist and open to feedback.
A strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
Must be able to clear Chicago Public School (CPS) fingerprinting and background checks.
