What are the responsibilities and job description for the Aquatics: Water Safety Instructor (non-lifeguard) - EXTRA HELP position at Spokane County?
NOTES: This recruitment will be used to fill up to ten seasonal positions with no benefits. Spokane County Aquatic Facilities are typically open from mid-June through mid-August, with staff training beginning in late May. All positions require successful clearance of a WA State Patrol inquiry under the Child and Adult Abuse Information Act. This recruitment may be used to fill up to ten (10) vacancies working 20 to 40 hours per week.Â

HOURLY WAGE: $17.66-$18.06Â per hour Depending on ExperienceÂ
Lifeguard certification is not a requirement for this position but increases hourly wage $.25/hour.Â
(Duties may include, but are not limited to the following)
Â
Plans, organizes, and implements class teaching outlines, methods and goals that support the general teaching outlines provided by the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Â Adapts teaching approach to match the experience and abilities of the participants. Â Organizes and directs activities of assigned students to provide high quality instruction for all students.Â
Â
Establishes positive public relations with parents/guardians of class students helping them recognize and understand swimming safety, skill development, and achievements. Resolves simple public complaints in matters related to swimming instruction and refers other complaints to the supervisor.Â
Â
Enforces pool safety standards and facility operational rules for all individuals using the facilities.Â
Â
Completes and submits records and documentation of completed lessons to the Aquatics supervisor and the American Red Cross.

 Required: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification* must be obtained before the start of employment.  (Must be age 16 or older to obtain this certification.)
 *Employees who pursue Red Cross WSI certification may be eligible for educational reimbursement for the WSI course fee.  For Educational Reimbursement Policy info, contact Recreation Department staff.

Minimum Water Safety Instructor Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Prior experience in aquatic venues preferred.Â
- Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds.
- Available to commit to teaching two-week sessions of swim lessons (8 30-min lessons)
