This position works 40 hours per week.
The position allocated to this classification is responsible for supporting the Land Surveyor in construction projects including roads, bridges, and sewer construction. The incumbent performs basic technical process work and may lead survey projects, ensuring tasks are completed accurately and on time. Duties are performed according to standard formats and specific direction but require knowledge of legal descriptions, documents, cadastral principles and terminology. Work is assigned and reviewed by the Land Surveyor 2. This class is distinguished from the Land Surveyor 2 class by managing smaller survey projects or project components as a Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT), requiring a lesser degree of technical knowledge, expertise and responsibility for discretionary actions.
TOTAL COMPENSATION: $85,958 - $120,324 annually. Total compensation is an estimate based upon base compensation, median retirement fund contributions, and current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates (including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability, and leave). The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.

- Assists in coordinating survey crews and inspectors, ensuring that all team members are aware of their roles and responsibilities.
- Assists with and/or provides training and mentoring for survey crews and inspectors related to emerging technologies and surveying practices.
- Under the guidance of the Land Surveyor 2, assigns survey and inspection tasks to crew members ensuring tasks are distributed evenly and are compatible with each team member’s skills and abilities.
- Checks plat maps for mathematical data, ensuring all measurements and calculations are accurate and complete.
- Acts as a liaison between the survey crews and those departments/agencies requesting survey support.
- Researches new projects for legal description, gathering all necessary information to ensure the project is feasible and beneficial.
- Reviews plans and specifications for roads, bridges, and sewers, ensuring all plans are accurate, complete, and in compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
- Interprets plans and specifications for County construction projects, ensuring all team members understand the plans and are able to carry out their tasks effectively.
- Sets up and operates all survey instruments and equipment as needed, including other associated field work as necessary to complete required survey operations.
- Operates small unmanned aerial system (UAS) as a Pilot in Command; plans and implements UAS missions, assists other UAS Pilots and functions as a Visual Observer.
- Performs other duties as required/assigned
- Associate’s degree in Surveying, engineering or engineering technology or related field from an accredited college or university, and .
- Two (2) years of land surveying experience.
- An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to be certified as a Land Surveyor in Training may be considered.
- Certification as a Land Surveyor in Training is required, or the ability to acquire certification within 1 year of employment.
- FAA Part 107 (Remote Pilot airman with small UAS rating) certification is required, or the ability to acquire certification within one (1) year of employment.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License at time of employment.
- Knowledge of the techniques, principles, and practices of land surveying, including the use of standard equipment and technology utilized for land survey.
- Proficiency in using Trimble surveying software, Autodesk Civil 3D, UAS (drone) software and Microsoft Office software.
- Basic understanding of mathematics utilized in surveying, including geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.
- Skilled in mechanical and spatial reasoning.
- Skilled in data collection, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Good customer service techniques and phone etiquette, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients, team members, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and understandable way.
- Ability to inspect projects for compliance with rules and regulations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels and with various community resources and agencies.
- Ability to prepare technical reports, with strong attention to detail and the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to learn new work processes and adapt to change.
