SUMMARY:
The Spokane Tribe of Indians’ Fisheries Program is the Tribe’s technical lead for stream habitat data collection to support salmon reintroduction efforts in the Spokane River Watershed. Work performed by the Fisheries Program is highly collaborative with our partners in the Spokane Salmon Restoration Collaborative (SSRC).
SSRC is engaged in habitat restoration to prepare the Spokane River Watershed for the reintroduction of non-Endangered Species Act-listed Spring and summer/fall chinook salmon and improving habitat conditions for native red band trout.
The individual will join an interagency team responsible for gathering habitat and fisheries data to feed into an Ecosystem Diagnosis and Treatment (EDT) model. The results will aid in identifying sensitive areas within the watershed for implementing stream habitat restoration projects and developing a comprehensive restoration plan. Additional activities include assisting with other fisheries programs, including but not limited to; salmon reintroduction research and management activities, resident fisheries research and management activities, and ecosystem monitoring.
JOB DUTIES:
· Function as field crew lead for riverine habitat data collection activities.
· Lead data collection, entry, and QA/QC for all sampling efforts.
o This is inclusive of specific data collection studies on stream habitat conditions for EDT modeling.
o Stream temperature monitoring
o eDNA sampling
· Assist internal and external project partners with tributary sampling efforts, and other activities as needed and available.
· Meticulous adherence to written SOPs and survey protocols. Will always prioritize crew and equipment safety.
· Will use best professional judgement and experience to prioritize field crew safety and the quality and integrity of collected data.
· Co-author annual reports, data summaries, supplementary white papers, and manuscripts for publication.
· Present data at public meetings and professional society/organization meetings.
· Take responsibility for maintenance of all Fisheries Program equipment including vehicles, vessels, sampling equipment, and storage space.
o Ensure regular preventative maintenance is performed on all vehicles and vessels, and that non-routine maintenance is completed efficiently.
o Perform regular preventative maintenance and non-routine maintenance of sampling equipment. Examples include water quality monitoring probes, temperature loggers, etc.
o Regularly clean and organize equipment and storage space, ensuring conditions are suitable for short and long-term storage of vehicles, vessels, and sampling equipment.
o Maintain equipment inventory and maintenance logs.
· Purchase equipment and supplies when needed for field operations.
· Coordinate and communicate with private landowners, Program Biologists, and field crews regarding surveys and scheduling.
· Assist Program Biologists with gear preparation, maintenance, and inventory management.
· Will work closely with youth through numerous internship programs aimed at increasing interest in natural resources science. Will be expected to work closely, respectfully, and safely with a diverse group of interns ranging in age, background, and experience.
· Respectfully interact with the diverse constituency of the Spokane River watershed.
· Safely operate Tribal work vehicles in compliance with Tribal policies.
· Advises updates to SOPs and survey protocols in response to changing Program needs.
· Assists with writing and updating safety protocols, management plans, and guiding documents.
· Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- A valid Washington Driver’s License (or ability to attain one) and must be eligible for the Tribe’s vehicle insurance.
- Must have (or ability to attain) a Washington Boater Education Card.
- Knowledge and capacity to implement appropriate habitat monitoring techniques. Strong background in field survey and research methods, data analysis and statistics.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and collaborate effectively with diverse co-workers, project partners, and public outreach organizations.
- Demonstrated scientific writing and communication background (e.g. published scientific articles, communications, presentation abstracts, etc.).
- This position requires ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in variable weather conditions, including peak summer heat, freezing temperatures, and in inclement weather.
- This position requires work to occasionally be performed outside general business hours, including early mornings and evenings.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Good employment history with references.
· Capable of performing and coordinating fieldwork with internal and external partners.
- Follow established protocols and adhere to programmatic standards. Knowledge and capacity to implement appropriate habitat monitoring methodologies.
· Operate vessels, motorized and human powered.
· Comfortable wading in rivers and performing work in variable weather conditions.
· Ability to work independently with limited to no supervision, at times.
· Ability to use ArcGIS or other geospatial software.
- Competent with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, outlook) and statistical software.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· 2 years (field seasons) of fisheries experience
· Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or a closely related field.
· Must have vehicle or access to transportation, a valid Washington State driver’s license and must meet insurance requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- One (1) season of crew lead experience.
