DEPARTMENT SPECIALIST (Level 3)

Reports to: Manager or Senior Manager or Assistant General Manager and General Manager

Compensation: $18.67 - $20.00 an hour, non-exempt position. Specific starting wages are dependent on location and experience.

Full Description Summary: As a Department Specialist, your primary focus is on department sales and not necessarily management of staff. You understand what makes Sports Basement awesome and unique. You demonstrate WOW customer service with your expert knowledge of the department and deep understanding of the product. You live and breathe the sport you specialize in, staying up to date and ahead of the game when it comes to the latest gear, and share your knowledge with the team. You genuinely care about selling the customer the gear that’s right for them, not just the most expensive stuff, providing advice and proper fitting as needed.If you love talking about outdoor gear, this is the position for you! From introducing beginners to a new sport or hobby to trading insider tips with experts, you'll get to talk to a huge range of customers about the gear and adventures you love the most. You specialize in what you love and share it with others.

What you’ll do:

Customer Service

• Assist customers in an enthusiastic and courteous manner; providing service that makes customers say "wow!" (in a good way).

• Advise and suggest products and gifts that are perfect for customers and their needs (not just whatever's priced the highest!).

• Communicate with the Vendors, buyers, and the department manager to ensure that they are creating a seamless WOW experience with all of their customers.

• Effectively implements expectations for SB's Security Policy.

• Make genuine connections with customers by engaging in conversation. Ask open-ended questions with the intent to understand what the customer needs and tailoring your approach.

• You are a product expert. You go out of your way to gain a full understanding of product descriptions and their technical nuances to be able to answer any question a customer might pose.

• Make our customers aware of sales and promotions so they are always getting the best shopping experience possible

Business Experience

• Stay up-to-date with all company information and quickly implements all initiatives

• Partner with Assistant General Manager or General Manager to utilize reports and other tools to make decisions to impact performance/sales positively

• Participate in marketing conversations and champions impactful events for the store

• Applies company core values and actively seeks out improvement opportunities for their assigned department and personal development

• Effectively communicate both written and verbally to all levels of the business.

• Provides support to the sales floor during peak periods or when the need arises.

• Understands the charm of Sports Basement, creating a positive and fun vibe that elevates the customer and staff experience

• Qualifications:

• Previous retail or industry experience

• Knowledge of the gear in the assigned department.

• Ability to advise and suggest products that are perfect for customers' wants and needs.

• Exposure to goal planning and driving a team to achieve increased sales and service

• Able to create that WOW experience for every customer

• Strong verbal and written communication with customers

• Internal Candidates: Experience using all HR, scheduling tools, rental systems and business tools: including but not limited to Google Docs, Paycom, Shopify, POS systems, Winterstieger, Sales Saver, Lightspeed and Fiori that are pertinent to their role

• Available to work during operating hours which include most weekdays, weekends, and holidays (except Thanksgiving and Christmas).Preferably have an open schedule.
