What are the responsibilities and job description for the Elementary School Head Custodian - 24/25 SY position at Spotsylvania County School District?
The School Head Custodian supervises and supports custodial staff as they maintain a clean, healthy, and safe work environment of the school district’s buildings. The Head Custodian makes minor repairs and regularly inspects the buildings for preventative maintenance measures. This position will also secure the building by setting the security and alarm systems.
Essential Job Functions:
- Makes minor repairs to equipment and reports major problems to the school principal and coordinator of custodial services
- Performs minor repair tasks as requested by the school principal or teachers
- Performs routine cleaning tasks in the school offices, classrooms, hallways, and restrooms on a daily basis
- Performs yearly maintenance tasks such as stripping, sanding, sealing, waxing, and buffing gymnasium floor
- Conducts inspection of the school building to ensure all areas of the building are clean
- Inspects heating, lighting, and ventilation system and fire safety systems are working properly to provide a safe environment for students and staff
- Assures adequate janitorial supplies and equipment are available to maintain the cleanliness of the building
- Orders cleaning supplies when needed
- Directs the cleaning tasks of the custodial staff to ensure all areas of the building are clean
- Provides instructions and assistance to custodial staff for new or unusual assignments to ensure they are carried out properly
- Maintains the custodial staff time cards to ensure accuracy and that the staff are paid correctly
Education and Experience:
Required
- High School Diploma or GED
- Current (valid, non-expired) Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire
- Three (3) years of experience as a custodian, ideally within an public school system

Employment Terms: Employment may be offered as a 12-Month (243 Day) contract, at a minimum of 7.5 hours worked per day. This position is evaluated annually.
