Job Summary: School counselors utilize a comprehensive school counseling program to assist students in the development of academic, social/personal, and career exploration skills through the delivery of classroom lessons, individual counseling and small group counseling. School counselors consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and community members to provide students with the tools necessary to achieve success in school. School counselors advocate for students and assist them to become life ready in the pathway of their choosing.
Essential Functions:
- Provides individual and small group counseling to students in the areas of academics, personal/social concerns and career exploration
- Conducts classroom lessons to students to enhance academic, social/personal, and career development
- Assesses student abilities, interests, and talents to develop realistic academic and career goals
- Assist students in the development of an Academic Career Plan (ACP) to help students determine an appropriate educational pathway to their goals
- Collects, analyzes, and presents data relevant to student achievement and behavior to demonstrate student growth and progress
- Provides opportunities for parents to gain information that assists in student development of skills in the areas of academics, personal/social issues, and career exploration
- Provides programs, activities, and services which focus on helping children to experience healthy academic and social growth
- Works to promote a healthy school climate and safe learning environment for all students
- Assists with crisis intervention and the identification and implementation of prevention and intervention programs for students
- Promotes effective public relations through participation in community and professional activities
- Assists students with career counseling and course selection relative to their educational pursuits and career goals
- Attends ongoing professional learning to continuously improve professional competence
- Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions;
- Performs related duties as assigned by the building administrator(s) in accordance with the school/division policies and practices.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge in human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders. Possess a strong desire to help others and possess the ability to inspire respect, trust, and confidence. Demonstrate command of Standard English, both spoken and written. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, memos and reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students and the general public. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Education and Experience:
- Required: Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis on school counseling
- Applicant with counseling experience must have an acceptable rating from such counseling;
- Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university;
- Possess or be eligible to acquire appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
Salary: This is an 11 month position. Additional compensation awarded for credits earned toward additional degrees. New employees to Spotsylvania County will be compensated for up to 20 years of experience.
