General Statement of Job

Under limited supervision, employee is primarily responsible for supporting the operations of the Spotsylvania County Farmers’ Market (SCFM) at assigned locations. Responsibilities include efficiently and effectively operating the market, coordinating SCFM social media presence, and maintaining vendor and customer relations. Assists Farmers Market / Agriculture Coordinator with agriculture duties as needed. Reports to the Farmers’ Market / Agriculture Coordinator.

Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the vendor application process.
  • Ensures compliance with all vendor applications, communications, scheduling, farm inspections, and reporting.
  • Operates the SCFM booth.
  • Recruits and selects vendors, collects registrations/license fees, and assists applicants through the process,
  • Must be present on site at SCFM; this includes weekends and possibly holidays.
  • Collects, records, and reports relevant market data(e.g., vendor attendance, customer attendance, and vendor sales) and is accessible to vendors and patrons on market days.
  • Coordinates and assists with special events and market programs that provide beneficial and educational activities for the community (e.g., community outreach and promotional events).
  • Administers market rules and regulations, and safety requirements ensuring vendors understand and are in compliance.
  • Responds to customer and vendor inquiries and complaints.
  • Administers an operational budget for each market season.
  • Administers a communications plan for each market season.
  • Coordinates and administers the SCFM social media presence.
  • Participates in end-of-season market evaluation and goal setting for the next season.
  • Provides other duties and services necessary and appropriate to assure efficient market operation while maintaining at all times positive, non-discriminatory relations with all market vendors and customers.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Training & Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent with a background in customer service and good written and verbal communication skills; basic computer skills with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Power Point) and basic accounting abilities are required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Experience with social media is preferred.

Experience with Farmers' Markets is preferred.

  • Knowledge of seasonality of crops, crop production, succession planting, and season extension.
  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and methods utilized in agricultural institutions.
  • Ability to keep abreast of any changes within the marketing field.
  • Has the ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with employees, supervisors, members of the general public, and all other groups involved in the activities of the Department of Economic Development.
  • Ability to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear, and effective manner.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and work with little direct supervision as situations warrant.
  • Ability to use mathematical skills to handle required calculations using percentages and decimals.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency with computers. Ability to read, understand, and interpret financial and computer reports and related materials.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, financial, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange financial information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.
  • Ability to read a variety of informational and financial documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.
  • Ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
  • Ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.
  • Ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques, to make independent judgments in the absence of supervision, and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures and policies, and follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines, and objectives.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, determine percentages, and determine time and weight.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines, tools, and equipment, such as a computer, printer, typewriter, copy machine, facsimile machine, encoding machine, calculator, pager, or telephone. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects is considered requirement for Medium Work. Frequent standing and walking for prolonged periods maybe required. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with office equipment. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating the other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color. May require the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving the nature of sounds by ear).
