SSM is currently recruiting for an Industrial Hygienist/Environmental Technician to join our team. This role is focused on providing Indoor Environmental Quality/Air Quality (IEQ/IAQ) Assessments, abatement monitoring, and other environmental investigations, including testing for industrial and environmental hazards such as asbestos, lead, and mold. This position requires flexibility in work location and timing, as projects may start at different times each day. There may be rare instances of travel, overnight stays, or weekend work as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to environmental investigations by conducting sampling according to protocol across various environmental media, including drinking water, air, building materials, dust, paint chips, and more.
- Conduct on-site surveys, inspections, assessments, and abatement oversight while monitoring safety procedures and regulations.
- Perform air monitoring during asbestos abatement, lead, and mold remediation activities.
- Carry out industrial hygiene field measurements to verify workplace contamination levels and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations regarding asbestos, lead, and other environmental hazards.
- Conduct routine site inspections, collect bulk samples, and create reports in line with applicable State and Federal protocols.
- Conduct limited asbestos surveys.
- Train with experienced Industrial Hygienists, focusing on asbestos and lead abatement projects. Engage in both classroom and field training to earn required licenses, certifications, and the knowledge needed for the role.
Requirements
- AS or BS degree in Environmental Sciences or a related field preferred.
- Two years of experience in asbestos, lead paint, IAQ, water intrusion/mold, and general industrial hygiene, including facility-related abatement project monitoring and inspections, preferred.
- Experience in industrial hygiene, environmental health and safety, and the use of common IEQ/IAQ field instruments, with valid certifications preferred.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to interpret floor plans and calculate material quantities and square footage.
- Ability to obtain and maintain necessary PA Act 114 clearances (PA State Criminal History Background Check, Federal Criminal History Report, and PA Child Abuse Clearance).
- A valid PA driver’s license is required as the position involves on-site service to clients.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including standing, sitting, reaching, crawling, climbing, and squatting.
- Capable of lifting to 50 lbs. and operating/wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) throughout the day.
- Ability to pass a medical clearance physical to wear a respirator and withstand high and low temperatures on-site.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders as needed.
