The salary range(s) represents our good faith estimate for the role at this time. Join our team as a Market Design Analyst!
The Market Design Analyst plays a critical role in understanding the current market design and analyzing the impact of potential design modifications. You will support the Market Working Group by facilitating design changes through the SPP stakeholder process and conducting in-depth market analysis to resolve issues. This position requires collaboration across various teams, including Operations, Legal, Regulatory, Settlements, and Congestion Hedging, ensuring the software and processes are consistent with the market design.
Additionally, you will work with market participants, vendors, FERC, and other RTOs/ISOs to set market policy. You will also help coordinate efforts between the WEIS and the SPP Integrated Marketplace, playing an essential role in advancing Western Markets initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Market Design Analysis & Change Facilitation:
- Understand and apply the company’s market rules to business functions.
- Facilitate market design changes through the SPP stakeholder process and recommend necessary changes.
- Support the Market Working Group and provide technical expertise to other committees and working groups.
- Market Coordination & Communication:
- Coordinate and communicate with SPP market participants and member companies on market design issues.
- Work closely with internal departments such as Operations, Legal, Regulatory, Settlements, and Congestion Hedging to ensure alignment between market design and processes.
- Policy & Market Analysis:
- Analyze market data to identify weaknesses and areas for improvement through ad-hoc analysis.
- Research and analyze the market design of other RTOs/ISOs and apply best practices.
- Develop market metrics, create reports, and document analysis and studies in written reports.
- FERC Support & Education Development:
- Support FERC filings by providing data and assisting with drafting testimony and filing letters.
- Review and develop educational materials related to market design, contributing to training initiatives.
- Compliance & Procedures:
- Understand and ensure compliance with SPP Policies and Procedures.
To be successful as Market Design Analyst we're looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, mathematics, or other related field
- Market Design Analyst II - Three (3) years of job-related experience (not eligible for remote work)
- Sr. Market Design Analyst - Five (5) years of job-related experience
- Lead Market Design Analyst - Ten years (10) job-related experience
- Proficient at organizing and conducting technical and analytical studies
- Knowledge of electric market concepts and ability to apply understanding in unique analysis
- Ability to support diverse team members and manage complex analysis projects
- Strong facilitation skills
- Strong interpersonal and team-building skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Competent working skills with communication and data handling software such as Microsoft Office, Excel and Access
- Demonstrate proficiency in business acumen and professional conduct
- Demonstrate the ability to function with constantly changing and multiple priorities
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills
Senior Level Requirements:
- Ability to recognize and address strategic issues important to Market Design
- Proficient at organizing and conducting complex technical and analytical studies
- Skilled at analyzing complex issues and communicating results to diverse stakeholders
Lead Level Requirements:
- Ability to recognize and address strategic issues important to Market Design
- Proficient at organizing and conducting complex technical and analytical studies
- Skilled at analyzing complex issues and communicating results to diverse stakeholders
- Maintain full accountability in decision making and meeting deadlines
- Provide training and mentoring to other staff
Preferred:
- Advanced degree in economics, math or other related field of study
- Experience in utility operations, RTO operations or energy trading
- Experience with data manipulation and analysis of large data sets
Work Environment:
- This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
- This is a full-time position. Days and hours of the workweek are Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Working extended hours may be required.
Travel Requirement:
- This position requires moderate travel (approximately 10-15%)
