Spread the Word Nevada was formed in February 2001 by Co-Founders Laurie Hartig and Lisa Habighorst.

Spread the Word Nevada is dedicated to advancing early childhood literacy by placing books into the homes of children within Nevada's at-risk, low-income communities. Through community collaboration, mentorship, and family partnership programs, Spread the Word Nevada fosters reading and language development opportunities, ultimately leading to brighter academic and economic futures for these children. We are dedicated to changing the lives of at-risk children, one book at a time.

Spread the Word Nevada has various programs that they support, coordinate, and facilitate to advance childhood literacy. Programs include the Kids-to-Kids program, the Breakfast / Snack Time with Books program, the Books & Buddies program, and the Readers in Training program. Currently, the Organization's programs are being implemented, supported, and utilized throughout a continuously growing number of elementary schools throughout the Greater Las Vegas Valley and Washoe County, Nevada.

Position Summary

The Marketing / Outreach Coordinator reports to the Washoe County Manager and will help to assist in building the Spread the Word Nevada brand throughout Northern Nevada through creation of social, digital, and print marketing efforts as well as community volunteer and outreach events.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Create unique and authentic content for STWN Northern's Facebook, Instagram, STWN Website, and monthly and parent newsletters based on our content pillars. Content type includes photos, videos, graphic artwork, captions, memos, articles, infographics, etc.
  • Create weekly and monthly content calendar to promote mission and brand.
  • Assist with print production design and needs.
  • Maintain a catalogue of STWN Northern's company photos, graphic artwork and documents.
  • Facilitate volunteer book cleaning events
  • Facilitate and lead off-site programs, including Breakfast / Snack Time with Books and Readers in Training
  • Interact with volunteers
  • Assist with incoming and outgoing processing of books
  • Speak in front of groups of people
  • Assist with community outreach and community events.
  • Other duties may be assigned at the Washoe County Manager's discretion related to the fundamental aspects of the Program Assistant or related positions.

Education and / or Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma required
  • Experience working with children and families preferred
  • General Requirements

  • 2 years of work experience providing content for digital / print platforms preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook and Instagram).
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Proficient with photo and video editing, including Canva, Photoshop or similar software.
  • Detail-oriented and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work without supervision.
  • Familiarity with children's literature a plus.
  • Effective in providing instruction to large groups of people.
  • Use of reliable personal vehicle, valid auto insurance, and valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment screening.
  • Ability to Comply with the Company Policy as a requirement of a position that could adversely affect the safety of others.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid Nevada State Drivers' License
  • Current Nevada State Driving Record (w / in 30 days)

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand frequently; walk frequently; sit; use hands and fingers to point, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear. The employee is required to lift up to 35 pounds. The vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to drive a vehicle.

    Work Environment : While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to excessive heat, wet, and / or humid outside conditions. Due to working in an office, warehouse, and / or school setting, the noise level in the environment is moderate to high at times.
