JOB TITLE: Senior Accountant

 

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Business Services

 

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

 

PAYGRADE: AM 4

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

The Senior Accountant is responsible for all of the district’s special revenue grant accounting activities for the department. Performs complex accounting duties, including assisting the Director of Accounting with the annual audit, financial statements and schedules, preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), and other accounting duties and special projects. Assists in the review of the district’s daily, monthly, and annual financial reporting activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

 Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university
  • Three years’ job-related experience to include grant accounting

Preferred:

  • Five years’ job-related experience to include grant accounting 
  • Supervisory experience
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) 

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of TEA Financial Accountability Resource Guide (FASRG), governmental accounting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and practices
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel (e.g. pivot tables, VLOOKUP)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Skilled in use of accounting software systems
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong knowledge of computer programs/technology

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Manage all of the district’s special revenue grant accounting activities. This includes preparing indirect cost calculations, submitting intermittent and final expenditure reports to the state, overseeing the close of grant year funds, preparation of all special revenue audit and financial reports, and providing support to departments and campuses related to special revenue accounting. 
  • Coordinate the District’s special revenue and grant accounting activities with district’s grant program directors and staff.
  • Serves as a liaison between accounting department, schools and/or departments on special revenue accounting matters.
  • Coordinate special revenue accounting functions as they relate to general ledger activity and ensures accurate compilation of accounting data.
  • Responsible for all special revenue audit schedules and inquiries and assist with all other interim and year-end audit “prepared by client” auditor requests, as directed.
  • Prepare or review all journal entries related to special revenue and payroll.
  • Prepare estimated and annual payroll accrual for all funds.
  • Review all payroll distribution entries to correct payroll expenditures.
  • Prepare Comprehensive Annual Financial Report special revenue schedules, review statistical schedules for the report prepared by accountant, and responsible for compiling the draft versions of the report using Microsoft Word and Excel software.
  • Prepare Texas Education (TEA) annual financial report and data feed submission and annual actual financial PEIMS data submission for review by the Director of Accounting.
  • Assists with preparation and review of quarterly Medicaid Administrative Claiming (MAC) reports and annual School Health and Related Services (SHARS) report.
  • Identify and suggest process improvements to Director of Accounting.
  • Attend professional development training, workshops, and/or seminars to keep abreast of changes in applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Accounting.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:  physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting and prolonged use of a computer, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.  This position will also require traveling within the district. Mental demands: Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; Interface with all levels of leadership, dynamic environment with changing priorities and occasional irregular hours. Ability to be effective in both oral and written communication and the ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Ability to work independently.
