Through the Our Space Initiative, we assist formerly homeless households in securing long-term housing solutions, ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive.
Position Summary
Under the direction of Hope Center’s leadership, the Housing Specialist will provide direct support to formerly homeless individuals and families in securing stable housing. The specialist will work closely with various city agencies, community partners, and internal teams to facilitate housing placements, assist with subsidy applications, and ensure long-term housing stability for program participants.
Key Responsibilities
Housing Application Assistance: Guide clients through the process of applying for housing programs, including public housing and supportive housing, ensuring all necessary documentation is completed accurately and submitted promptly.
Collaboration with Service Providers: Work collaboratively with case planners, housing specialists, and coaches to explore and recommend viable housing options for clients.
Liaison with City Agencies: Maintain direct communication with city agencies such as NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS), Human Resources Administration (HRA), Department of Social Services (DSS), Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), and New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) to resolve housing-related matters.
Advocacy: Advocate for program participants by working with legal and housing service providers to address barriers to stable housing.
Record Maintenance: Maintain accurate records of housing applications, approvals, and case progress in compliance with program guidelines.
Qualifications & Skills
Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, human services, criminal justice, education, nursing, or cultural anthropology, including at least 12 credits in one discipline.
Experience: At least one year of experience in housing-related services is preferred.
Knowledge: Strong understanding of housing subsidies, vouchers (e.g., CityFHEPS, Section 8), and public benefit programs.
Skills: Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills. Proficiency in relevant housing application systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
Attributes: Ability to effectively engage and advocate for individuals and families navigating the housing system.
