Position Title: Summer Camp Counselor

Reporting Authority: Recreation Supervisor and/or Summer Camp Director

Classification: Non-Exempt – Non-Union

Salary: $15.00


Position Summary:


As a Summer Camp Counselor this position requires an ability to perform a full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Summer Camp Counselors receive instruction and/or assistance during the day from the Camp Director, Events Coordinator and/or Activities Coordinator. Counselors are able to adjust when new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures, interpret precedents, and adopt standard methods or practices to meet variations in facts and/or conditions. Counselors are required to have prior related experience that allows the employee to meet the qualification standards.


Specific Responsibilities:


  • Directing and supervising participants of the program.
  • Maintaining records pertinent to the program.
  • Implementing age appropriate activities and events including field trips.
  • Ensuring the health, welfare, and safety of the programs participants.
  • Working closely with the Camp Director and/or Events/Activities Coordinator(s) to ensure the success of the program through preparation.
  • Execution and evaluation of the program.
  • Assisting other staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with parents, community center staff and other key individuals.
  • Maintaining a fun and positive attitude daily to create happy environment for participants.
  • Periodic responsibilities include attending weekly staff meetings and/or trainings.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by Recreation Supervisor.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of youth and camp programs.
  • Possess excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide the necessary support to ensure the health and well-being of all participants and staff.
  • Must be able to take direction as well as have the ability to take initiative.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Requires a flexible work schedule that may require morning and evening hours.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to evaluate emergency situations and act decisively and effectively to resolve them.
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing.


General Requirements:

  • Must be able to read and write and have good command of the English language.
  • Good oral and written communication.
  • Physical capabilities – lifts 50 pounds, squat, bend and move as necessary for the job.
  • Must be able to perform basic mathematics.
  • Must have basic proficiency of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Must possess valid Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Must possess professional phone skills and work well with the public.
  • Must present a neat and professional appearance.
  • Responsible to follow policies and procedures outlined in Springfield Park District employee manual.
  • Must live within a 50-mile radius from Bunn Administration building 2500 S 11th Springfield IL 62703 in the State of Illinois or must be willing to move to such a compliant location within the first 6 months of acceptance of a position with the Springfield Park District.
