What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Youth Camp Counselor position at Springfield Promise Neighborhood?
The Summer Youth Camp Counselor facilitates youth summer enrichment opportunities for Springfield Promise Neighborhood. The goal is to help young people increase their skills and abilities, grow in their ability to be resilient and kind, and to participate in a wider range of art, athletic and service opportunities during the summer months.
The Summer Youth Camp Counselor will work with SPN staff to implement daily summer programming for students in grades 3-8. This includes STEM, sports and physical activity, physical health, and self-esteem and healthy relationships. The counselor will gain experience in educational leadership, program development and implementation, nonprofit management, and event planning.
We will know that the summer has been a success when we have 1) Helped align programs and opportunities in a way that increases the ability of young people in Springfield to enjoy them; 2) Developed and carried through summer programming that include opportunities in academics, art, athletics, and service; and 3) Enhanced recruitment/registration efforts so that student participation is increased.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with implementation of daily youth programming, which includes utilizing built curricular resources to create a lesson plan and provide instruction to a group of students, behavior management, and modeling a positive attitude and healthy relationships
- Assist with community including, but not limited to: educational sessions for families, “open houses” and family-building events where educational activities can be incorporated
- Assist in promotion, recruitment, public relations, and communication regarding summer camp activities
- Provide guidance and support to campers as well as fellow camp leaders, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.
- Monitor camper behavior and implement behavior management strategies as needed.
- Communicate effectively with parents and staff regarding camper progress and needs.
Qualifications:
- Able to work with adults and children coming from many diverse backgrounds
- A commitment to community development, community organizing, social justice issues and neighborhood-based change
- Proactive motivation, flexibility, independence, ability to problem solve, ability to remain calm in stressful situations, and acting as a positive role model are essential
- Physical requirements: Able to stand, sit, move, bend, twist, and run frequently to play with children; lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Experience in providing educational programming or a background in teaching and working with youth is appreciated but not required
- Must be willing to work in occasional inclement weather
Expected Positions to fill: 3-4. Compensation: $15 per hour; At-will; Bi-weekly pay schedule.
