REPORTS TO: Chief of Pupil Services 

 

SALARY: $100,913 - $136,059 

 

SCHEDULE: Full-Time, 22 vacation days, 8 contract days 

 

 

GENERAL SUMMARY 

Oversees all student health by supporting day-to-day management of the school health program. Hires and coordinates with support of nursing team developing staff and collaborating with community providers. Supports Principals/Teachers in general education, Special Education Supervisors, and Athletic Director in the management of medical needs of all students. Oversees completion of Department of Public Health mandated reports. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

POSITION DUTIES: 

  • Plan, supervise, assign, coordinate, and review the work of the school nurses. 
  • Responsible for the provision of basic school health services throughout the district.  Assumes a leadership role to ensure that services are provided in accordance with state and Federal regulations, organizational policy, and compliance requirements. 
  • Work collaboratively with school administration to provide nursing staff and address the needs of each school; up to and including ensuring that each school has adequate staffing, monitoring vacancies, posting positions, interviewing and hiring personnel, and collaboratively evaluating nursing personnel. 
  • Develop and implement written policies and procedures for health care services  
  • Evaluate the annual budget for medical supplies and make recommendations for purchase. 
  • Responsible for overseeing nursing department grants and budgets. 
  • Review nursing allocations annually. 
  • Provide clinical consultation to the nursing staff, health and physical education teachers, and other administrative and teaching staff 
  • Serve in a leadership capacity on the district’s Wellness Committee 
  • Recruit and hire nursing staff 
  • Responsible for nursing payroll 
  • Responsible for daily staffing of school nurses and Health Assistants for the district due to call outs and FMLA’s. 
  • Responsible for the districts’ medication administration program and signatory on the annual MDPH Medication Administration Registration Application. 
  • Responsible for completing CLIA waiver and annually  
  • Accountable for following Nurses’ union contract 
  • Implementation of Hepatitis B program annual for staff 
  • Responsible for annual notice posting for record destruction 
  • Accountable for overseeing contract renewals for agency nurses 
  • Schedules orientation and mentoring nursing personnel to implement school health program 
  • Meets monthly with school physician and Athletic Trainer, School Nurse Specialists and Team Leaders to collaborate in developing and implementing school health services and aligned practices.  
  • Carries out communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for standard precautions, prevention of blood borne pathogen exposure, and hazardous medical waste disposal 
  • Promote positive linkage and referral mechanisms to community providers for a range of services dealing with children 
  • Assist with ongoing continuing education for staff to facilitate their meeting of the requirements for licensure through DESE and maintain and expand clinical skills 
  • Oversees compliance issues for all schools, monthly report, principal report, immunizations, screenings, medication co-signing and epi pen training. 
  • Is a member of a Springfield task force, attends meetings and reports new information back to the department 
  • Facilitates implementation of new information regarding policies and procedures 
  • Organize and assist with educator plans and the evaluation process for nurses as indicated 
  • Supports Principal/Teachers/Special Education Supervisor in the Low Incidence Programs with management of medical needs. 
  • Support summer school and vacation school nursing needs 
  • Completes nursing competencies as needed 
  • Coordinator of American Heart Training Center requirements for instructors: Monitors for compliance of TCF and AHA instructors, teach instructor classes as needed, and track equipment 
  • Support with oversight of training and implementation of the Medicaid billing expansion program. 
  • Reviews AED policy annually with Superintendent. Supports tracking of AEDs pads and batteries for the district 
  • Help to coordinate with local emergency services and agencies to ensure a coordinated response during critical incidents to align with Medical/Behavioral Health Emergency Response Plans 
  • Ensure adherence with districts Medical/Behavioral Health Emergency Response Plans and oversees mandated medical drills for the district 
  • Monitors ordering of stock emergency medications for the district 
  • Manage Springfield Public Schools Nurse led immunization clinic and DPH Vaccine for Children’s compliance requirements 
  • Meets with Sodexo dietitian to manage district food allergies 
  • Additional duties as assigned 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Valid Massachusetts Registered Nurse License? 
  • Master’s degree in nursing or related health field from?an accredited college or university preferred 
  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary license in the areas of:):? 
  • School Nurse — Grades: All levels; Professional? 
  • Supervisor/Director - Non-Core  
  • SEI Endorsement preferred 
  • RN with greater than 5-years’ experience in a management position  
  • Current BLS CPR and First Aid certification 
  • Current CPR Instructor, Training Center Faculty

  • Ability to reason/analyze; use logic to identify and resolve problems 
  • Ability to establish and maintain constructive and cooperative interpersonal relationships with staff, peers, supervisors, or managers in the work unit and other departments, as well as with staff of outside entities and other individuals, as applicable to the essential duties and responsibilities

WORKING ENVIRONMENT 

This position requires the employee to be in an office or similar indoor environment that will provide for confidentiality.  Requires ability to travel amongst Springfield public schools’ locations.
