Job Summary: The Physical Plant Assistant Supervisor shall assist the Physical Plant Supervisor to assure the proper maintenance and custodial upkeep of the District’s physical assets. This person shall primarily supervise the operation of the District’s second shift custodial staff. The Physical Plant Assistant Supervisor shall act in the absence of, and at the direction of the Physical Plant Supervisor. This person will be expected to provide the basic tools necessary for job performance, to hold and maintain a valid driver’s license, and to use a personal vehicle in the performance of the job. Requirements include primarily working a 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. shift, overseeing weekend facility staffing and adapting schedule as needed and required based on the needs of the District and Physical Plant Supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Act in the absence of the Physical Plant Supervisor performing all duties as directed.
- Coordinate and assign work schedules for custodial employees under the guidance of the Physical Plant Supervisor.
- Assist with the hiring, review, supervision, training, and evaluation of staff members. Ability to manage in a union labor environment in compliance with the collectively bargained agreement.
- Conduct regular inspections of buildings and grounds for safety, health, and cleanliness. Ensure that all federal, state and local compliance issues are in order at the direction of the Physical Plant Supervisor.
- Oversee the scheduling of staff to cover events in the facilities in the evening, school holiday weeks and weekends to ensure proper coverage to maintain the safety of the buildings.
- Knowledge and ability to lead and maintain commercial cleaning of facilities. Ability to operate all equipment needed to meet commercial cleaning objectives.
- In the absence of the Physical Plant Supervisor, conduct District-wide building safety trainings to include Hazcom, SDS, Asbestos, injury and safety reporting, general building risk management training and others are requested.
- In the absence of the Physical Plant Supervisor, serve as physical plant lead on building safety and security in conjunction with District-wide safety coordinator. Maintain full knowledge of safety device protocols, alarm warnings and evacuation plans.
- Work with vendors as assigned to complete projects on time, on budget, to expectation.
- Assist Physical Plant Supervisor with e-Finance requisitions, purchase orders and associated data.
- Maintain general knowledge of HVAC trouble shooting, assessment and required needs to include direct digital control (DDC) components.
- Assist Physical Plant Supervisor in maintaining all inspection and certifications needed to operate facilities.
- Work closely with building principals in regard to the cleanliness and maintenance of their buildings and grounds.
- Perform maintenance and construction work on heating, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and other systems of machinery and equipment. Maintain fields and grounds. Perform maintenance and custodial work as required.
- Ability to assist with constructions projects District-wide.
- Assist the Physical Plant Supervisor with the development of operational and capital budget requests, meeting budgetary objectives and communicating needs with necessary substantiation. Assist with analysis of budgetary variances as requested.
- Ensure system of daily and periodic job duty checklists and job performance standards.
- Must maintain flexibility to ensure ability to meet a 24/7 on-call schedule and adapt to priorities as needs dictate. Requires the ability to switch to a day shift schedule as needed to ensure department priorities are met.
- Assist Physical Plant Supervisor with the inventory management of custodial equipment and cleaning supplies as well as purchasing of custodial equipment and cleaning supplies district-wide.
- Assist with the oversight of the physical plant inventory to include use and security.
- Ability to perform the duties of maintenance and custodial staff to act in their absence.
- Ability to work indoor and outdoor as required for extended periods of time.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
Supervision Received: Reports to, receives work assignments, and is evaluated by the Physical Plant Supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Responsible for the oversight of the second-shift custodial staff of the Physical Plant department and other staff as assigned by the Physical Plant Supervisor.

Education: High school degree, or equivalent, plus a minimum of three years of relevant experience required.- Experience: Plant maintenance and personnel management experience of three years minimum, preferably in a union environment. Commercial maintenance and cleaning experience required. Previous work with HVAC/DDC’s required. Ability and experience working with general carpentry hand tools as well as power tools. General carpentry skills needed.
- Language Skills: Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
- Mathematical Skills: Strong mathematical skills including ability to perform operations using units of weight measurement, volume and distance.
- Reasoning Ability/Mental Requirements: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations in a safe, efficient manner. Must be able to multi-task to meet objectives on time, on budget.
