The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission seeks qualified applicants for laborer positions to work out of its Colton Street facility in Springfield in the Meters department. This work involves traveling throughout the Commission's service area and often working independently under the direction of a supervisor. Typical duties include, but are not limited to, responding to service requests; reading, inspecting, and inventorying meters; investigating leaks; and, servicing shut-offs and turn-ons. The successful applicant will work in the field and also work in an office.

- Possess basic mechanical skills and the ability to use skills such as pneumatic (air-driven) equipment such as a compressor or a chipping gun
- Utilize excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support customers (residents and businesses)
- Have experience with multiple types of technology (laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.) and the ability to quickly learn new software applications
- Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail especially the ability to document work in a clear, concise, and detailed manner
The successful applicant must be able to work first shift and second shift as needed. The typical work schedule is 7 : 00-3 : 30. Second shift is 12 : 00 (noon) - 8 : 00om. Assignment to second shift will be made in accordance with the union contract.
A current state Driver's License is required.
Candidates who are offered positions will be required to complete a pre-employment criminal background check, pre-employment physical, and pre-employment drug test. Employment offers are conditioned on the applicant's ability to satisfy the Commission's pre-employment requirements.

This is a non-exempt position with some overtime. Candidates must be available for on-call rotation as needed including nights and weekends. Starting hourly rate is $21.63 to $25.01 depending on experience. Promotional opportunities are regularly available. This is a full-time 40 hour / week position with paid sick and vacation time.
