SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Springs Rescue Mission (SRM) considers every position a vital and valued part of our ministry. Employees are expected to actively engage in prayer, devotions, and Bible study while contributing to a culture of teamwork and collaboration. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director of Communications creates compelling content that inspires and engages internal teams, board members, donors, and the broader community. This position combines high-level strategy with hands-on execution to ensure Springs Rescue Mission's communications effectively advance its mission. The Director of Communications works collaboratively with the Director of Marketing to ensure all content is adapted and optimized for specific audiences and platforms, supporting SRM’s overall strategic goals. While the Director of Communications focuses on storytelling, donor appeals, and organizational messaging, the Director of Marketing tailors this content to meet audience-specific needs, drive engagement, and achieve measurable outcomes.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Content Creation and Collaboration

  • Create content for a variety of communication channels, including direct mail appeals, donor stories, newsletters, and internal updates.
  • Develop narratives that reflect SRM’s mission, emphasizing dignity, compassion, and hope.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing to ensure content is adapted to meet specific audience needs and strategic goals.
  • Maintain consistency in messaging across all channels while allowing for audience-specific tweaks and optimizations.

Storytelling and Strategic Communication

  • Capture and craft stories from SRM’s clients, guests, and programs that inspire stakeholders and reinforce the organization’s impact.
  • Develop an annual communication and PR plan that aligns with SRM’s strategic priorities and goals.
  • Support the CEO and leadership team in communicating organizational changes, ensuring alignment, understanding, and engagement across all stakeholders.
  • Write speeches, emails, and create PowerPoint presentations and other speaking materials for the CEO.

Public Relations & Media Engagement

  • Serve as SRM’s primary spokesperson for media relations, responding to inquiries and proactively engaging with journalists.
  • Write and distribute press releases, media kits, and public statements to promote SRM’s work and impact.
  • Monitor trends in homelessness locally and nationally to position SRM proactively in public conversations.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with community leaders, churches, and partner organizations to amplify SRM’s mission.

Internal Communications

  • Foster a culture of clear and consistent communication across the organization.
  • Create and share content that aligns staff, programming teams, and the board with SRM’s strategic goals and priorities.

Leadership & Professional Development

  • Train and equip potential SRM spokespeople to represent the organization effectively in media and community engagements.
  • Collaborate with Advancement, Program, and Executive teams to align communication strategies with organizational priorities.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current on communication and nonprofit trends, tools, and best practices.
  • In this role, you may be required to drive on behalf of Springs Rescue Mission utilizing SRM company vehicle and/or your personal vehicle. In accordance with that, a valid driver’s license, current proof of insurance and/or clean driving record for a minimum of 3 years is required. To ensure the safety of our employees and compliance with state and federal law, SRM utilizes ongoing Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) monitoring where MVR reports may be run randomly to ensure you have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record if utilized as driver.

  • Measurable results from communication efforts using data from employee engagement surveys and PR management tools.

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field (master’s degree preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit communications, public relations, or a similar role.
  • Proven experience capturing and writing compelling human-interest stories.
  • Familiarity with PR management tools is a plus

  • Maintains a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and is a constant witness. Christ-centered and compassionate attitude in dealing with people including the homeless and faithfully upholds and exemplifies SRM’s Statement of Faith. 
  • A solid and credible Christian witness and lifestyle that exemplifies Christ in character and action.
  • Proficiency in digital platforms, including social media, email marketing, and content management systems.
  • Highly ethical, trustworthy, and professional.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills.  
  • Ability to interact effectively with SRM leadership, departmental staff, media, and community leadership.
  • Excellent editorial, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent editing and writing skills with preferences toward persuasive communication. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain media relationships
  • Must be self-directed hands-on
  •  Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL FACTORS:

Occasionally = 1%-33%; frequently = 34%-66%; continuously = 67%-100%. 

  • Typical office working environment with majority of time spent looking at a computer monitor. Will involve occasional travel primarily within state of Colorado along with occasional weekend and evening work as needed, sometimes in a non-office or outdoor environment. 
  • Occasionally: must be able to lift to 25 pounds, standing, bend or stretch, stair climbing
  • Frequently: walking, talking, manual dexterity
  • Continuously: sitting, adequate vision and hearing, fine motor skills, adequate use of fingers and hands, good mental condition to withstand consistently medium to high levels of stress
