Apprentice Lineworker

1st to 3rd year apprentice Lineman

Description :

Under the direction of a Line Crew Supervisor and Journey Line Worker, performs supervised apprentice level duties in the construction, maintenance, installation and repair of electrical distribution and service lines.

Duties :

Uses tools normally used in line work such as hotline tools, power hand tools, hand tools.

Operates bucket trucks, digger-derrick trucks, trenchers, backhoes, etc.; cleans up after the project has been completed

Accurately takes monthly meter readings, and assists in monthly shut-off.

Translate knowledge of electrical distribution systems into a finished product.

Fully understands and follows all required safety procedures.

Erects new power poles, attaching cross arm and necessary equipment, transformers, insulators, lightning arresters, switches, underground cable installation, street lights, etc.

Under supervision assists journey line worker in energized projects as permitted by the department apprentice allowable work practices

Responsible for completing an apprenticeship that includes documenting on the job training hours and on personal time attending related night school instruction.

Assists in responding to emergency after hour trouble calls as needed.

Must abide by all city policies and procedures.

Must be team oriented with a positive work attitude.

Year 1 : 600 volt and under

Year 2 : Single Phase Primary Lines

Year 3 : Three Phase Primary Lines

Year 4 : Three Phase Primary Lines

All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent with one (1) year of experience in at least one of the following : heavy equipment operation;

trenching for and installing underground pipe or conduit; pulling wire; or electric utility construction.

The following experience / education is preferred : prior electric utility construction or operation experience, current enrollment in a Lineman apprentice program, or completion of a college or technical school program with an emphasis in line worker skills.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Shall have basic knowledge of Microsoft operating programs (ie : Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in written form.
  • Some knowledge of electricity.
  • Some knowledge of appropriate safety practices utilized while working with power lines and electrical equipment. Shall obtain knowledge of OSHA, NESC and APPA, job procedure safety regulations.
  • Some knowledge of math including algebra
  • Shall possess valid Utah CDL license and shall maintain appropriate driving record.
  • Shall increase knowledge of electricity and knowledge of appropriate safety practices utilized while working with power lines and electrical equipment.
  • Shall be able to learn line worker skills and use of the variety of tools necessary in line work, i.e., hot-line tools, line and bucket truck, etc.
  • Shall be able to work effectively with crews.
  • Shall be able to quickly solve problems.
  • Shall work towards journey-level line worker skills.
  • Shall have working knowledge of job and safety procedures.
  • Shall be pole climbing certified or become certified within ninety (90) day period.
  • Shall be bucket truck rescue certified or become certified within ninety (90) day period.
  • Shall be pole top rescue certified or become certified within ninety (90) day period.
  • Shall be CPR certified or become certified within ninety (90) day period.
  • Shall be first aid certified or become certified within ninety (90) day period.
  • Shall be AED certified or become certified within ninety (90) day period.
  • Shall be capable of lifting required utility materials and tools, up to 100lbs.
  • Shall be able to operate a backhoe, bucket truck, digger-derrick truck, and other utility equipment.
  • Shall pass a drug test and be fit for duty.
  • Shall be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Ability to physically climb poles and towers and install various equipment while being supported by a lineman climbing belt.
  • Must have the knowledge by year three (3) to take the on call shift

Physical Demands :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls;

and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear.

The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to one hundred (100) pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Must be able to meet DOT hearing standard requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, temperature extremes, fumes or airborne particles, traffic, risk of electrical shock and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually high.
