Description:
Under the direction of the Watch Commander, a Police Officer performs duties that lead to the preservation of public peace, protection of life and property, apprehension of violators of the law, enforcement of the law, traffic control, and public education or training pertaining to law enforcement. Police Officers may be assigned to any Division or position in the Department.
Entry Level Trainee:
- Starting pay $27.46/hr.
- Pay increases to $28.83/hr. after academy and field training is completed.
- Pay increases to $30.27/hr. one year after completion of field training.
Police Officer l, Grade 14:
- $24.63 - $37.09 DOE
Police Officer ll, Grade 16:
- $27.15 - $40.89 DOE
Duties:
A Police Officer I/II must perform the following essential functions:
- Answer calls for service professionally, promptly, and fairly.
- Identify and correct hazardous situations which come to their attention, and for which they are qualified. If the nature of the hazard is such that they cannot take timely measures for its correction, they shall report or cause a report to be made to competent authority for its relief.
- Keep abreast of changes in case law, statutory law, and in the rules and regulations of Springville Police Department and Springville City.
- Abide by, promote, and keep the tenets of the Peace Officer Code of Ethics (Section 4-1-4).
- Strive to eliminate opportunities for crime through diligent patrol, avoiding a set routine or pattern while on patrol, familiarizing themselves with the entire city, especially crime prone areas, and by following good patrol procedure.
- Police officers of this department, when outside Springville City, are hereby directed to aid any law enforcement officer who may need, or who may appear to need immediate assistance in overcoming resistance to legal process; and/or in any situation wherein the safety of the law enforcement officer is involved.
- Police officers shall obey commands of ranking officers in accordance with outlines set forth in the departments Rules and Regulations.
- Police officers shall treat the public with courtesy and respect, and shall act in keeping with the Mission Statement of the Springville Police Department.
Perform other duties as shall be assigned by higher competent authority or ranking officers.
Qualifications:
- Police Officers must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and generally must have successfully completed the Peace Officer Standards and Training Basic Academy.
- Applicants must be POST certified or certifiable at the completion of the Basic Academy or equivalent.
- All applicants must pass an extensive and rigorous background check, and must possess a valid driver's license.
- Nothing in this section precludes the Department from hiring a candidate and sponsoring his or her attendance in the Basic Police Academy.
Police Officer ll: Officers may be advanced to the position of Police Officer II on the 1st day of July after having completed all minimum qualifications listed below, and after having submitted a written request to the Chief of Police requesting the classification advancement, and outlining the officers' qualifications.
Officers considered for advancement must:
- Have a minimum of three (3) years experience as a full-time law enforcement officer.
- Have successfully completed the POST advanced officer course, or equivalent training and experience approved by Springville Police Department.
- Have completed a minimum of thirty-two (32) hours of specialized training in a single subject approved by Springville Police Department.
- Must not be the recipient of any written reprimand or formal disciplinary action within the past eighteen (18) months.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Police Officers must possess knowledge of State laws and City ordinances. They must also have knowledge of Department and City policies. Officers must possess the ability to communicate clearly and precisely both orally and in writing. They must have a working knowledge of the geographic layout of the City. Police Officers are expected to maintain a high level of skills in law enforcement related areas; operation of vehicles, firearms, arrest control techniques, communication, etc.
Police Officers must continue to meet the requirements as set forth by the State of Utah, Peace Officers Standards and Training, and by the Springville Police Department.
Police Officers must be able to respond calmly and professionally under stressful conditions; must be able to work under all types of weather conditions; must be able to properly interpret laws and ordinances and determine the appropriate enforcement action; and must be able to prepare reports, gather evidence, conduct interviews, and work with the public in a professional and appropriate manner.
Physical Demands:
Unless otherwise exempted, Police Officers are required to meet all standards set forth by the Department, including General Orders Section 5-4-1, Physical Fitness.
