SPS Global Talent’s client is seeking a skilled Controls Engineer to join their Addison, TX office. In this leadership role, you will be responsible for implementing automation solutions using PLC, HMI, SCADA, and DCS/Delta V platforms. You will interact directly with customers while guiding a team of engineers in determining requirements, developing specifications, and delivering comprehensive automation solutions—from design and programming to testing, commissioning, and qualification. Success in this role is measured by your ability to secure repeat work from both new and existing customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Control Systems Design & Implementation:
- Conceptualize, detail, and implement control systems for industrial processes and machinery tailored to customer requirements.
- Develop control system architectures, select appropriate components, produce schematic diagrams, and create comprehensive system documentation.
- Programming & Configuration:
- Program controllers (PLC, DCS/Delta V) and process visualization systems (HMI/SCADA) using languages such as Ladder, Sequential Function Chart, and Structured Text.
- Develop databases to archive and display historical system data.
- Leverage knowledge in standard programming languages (e.g., VBA, .NET, SQL, Python) for advanced HMI/SCADA system development as needed.
- Industrial Networking:
- For larger systems, design and implement industrial networks—including fiber, wired, and wireless systems—using protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profinet, and Modbus to interconnect control system components and instrumentation.
- Project Management:
- Develop project execution plans, work breakdown structures, associated budgets, scheduling, and time/financial tracking.
- Identify potential issues early and manage conflict resolution, while leading project status meetings.
- Oversee daily operations for projects up to $10M and ensure overall project profitability.
- Team Leadership & Mentorship:
- Act as the technical lead on projects and provide guidance to less experienced engineers and technicians.
- When appropriate, assume the role of Project Manager on smaller projects.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
- Experience & Technical Skills:
- Over 8 years of relevant experience is preferred, with expertise including:
- In-depth understanding of the Emerson DeltaV platform.
- Experience in transitioning from older platforms (such as PLC-5) to modern systems (e.g., ControlLogix).
- Proficiency with PLC hardware/software (including platforms from Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Modicon, etc.).
- Demonstrated knowledge of HMI/SCADA systems—including various software platforms that run on servers, virtual machines, and networks.
- Familiarity with DCS platforms like Emerson DeltaV or similar systems.
- Exposure to Batch/Recipes, Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), and ERP systems is a plus.
- Industry Experience:
- Experience in sectors such as Semiconductor, Life Sciences, Building Automation, Food and Beverage, Water Treatment, or general manufacturing is highly desirable.
- Additional Skills:
- Ability to design electrical schematics and control panels, including power distribution systems (up to 480VAC) in accordance with NEC standards.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD is preferred.
- Strong project management skills; PMP certification is a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the proven ability to lead teams and mentor junior staff.
- Professional references are required, ideally including feedback from a subordinate, a peer, and a manager.
Travel & Physical Demands
- Travel: Up to 25% travel is required, predominantly within the Dallas area.
- Physical Requirements: Regular requirements include clear vision (with color perception), auditory capabilities, clear speech, dexterity in the hands, driving, lifting, mounting/dismounting equipment, and pushing/pulling as needed.
