Summary of Job Description:
The Foundry Support Operator will have the knowledge and experience to operate equipment in the areas of Heat Treat, Blast, and Saws. They will assist in the training and development of other foundry support employees and direct the work of teammates as needed. Additionally, they must have the ability to function as a lead person when required and support the enforcement of safety rules, work rules, departmental instructions, work instructions, proper documentation, and system transactions throughout the Foundry Support Departments.
This position requires flexibility in covering off-shifts as needed. The home shift will be 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, but when covering an off-shift, the employee will receive a shift premium of $2.00 per hour.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
HEAT TREAT:
- Perform heat-treat operations in proper sequence on routing and per departmental instructions-castings and test material.
- Verify that all castings have been released for treating in systems prior to executing heat-treating.
- Visually inspect castings for defects before and after heat-treating operations.
- Ensure proper documentation such as furnace logs, heat numbers, etc. and that the paperwork stays accurate and follows the casting to the appropriate department.
- Perform maintenance on heat treat furnaces, quench equipment, media thermocouples and testing equipment to ensure that they are in good operating condition.
- Conduct Brinell or Rockwell tests, as needed.
- Collect test samples, prepare, and delivery to QC lab with necessary documentation.
BLAST:
- Perform heat numbers verification on rough castings before blasting.
- Inspect casting visually before and after blasting both for potential quality concerns and cleanliness.
- Safely load, blast, transact, tag, and stage castings.
- Monitor settings and readings on equipment to ensure castings are properly cleaned.
- Perform light maintenance of sandblast equipment, dust collection system and daily housekeeping.
- Monitor blast media to ensure it is performing at acceptable levels.
- Conduct pressure test as prescribed by job routing.
- Be able to proficiently operate all blasting equipment.
SAWS:
- Verify castings to be cut by heat number, material type, and ID/OD size to match specifications.
- Ensure proper castings are measured and cut to job routing requirements.
- Perform inspection of castings, conducting pressure tests as listed on job routing.
- Record accurate documentation on casting paperwork. Includes cast, lot and heat treat numbers.
- Monitor dust collector and inform maintenance of any problems.
- Assist in controlling traceability and preparation of test material.
- Perform light maintenance on all saws, as needed and perform daily housekeeping.
- Run all saws in safe, efficient manner.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Contribute to Spuncast’s Continuous Improvement Plan by actively participating on appropriate teams.
- Perform other similar or related duties as necessary or assigned.
- Safely work with all equipment, supplies, and product in accordance with training and the safety manual.
- Ability to train employees in all areas of foundry support in operations, safety and administration activities.
Qualifications and Experience:
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Experience:
Factory experience preferred
Knowledge:
Ability to learn safe operation of heat-treat furnaces and quenching equipment, abrasive blasting equipment, and saws.
Ability to obtain forklift certification.
Mechanical aptitude.
Solid math, problem solving, organizational, and communication skills.

Foundry Support Operator C may grow into Foundry Support Operator B; Foundry Support Operator B may grow into Foundry Support Operator A; Foundry Support Operator A may grow into a Lead Person.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
This position requires an individual to: regularly stand, walk, bend, or stoop; frequently reach with hands or arms; lift and/or move up to 70 pounds; use overhead cranes, operate industrial trucks and other machinery. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Employee may be exposed to temperature extremes. Use of hardhat, safety glasses, steel toe shoes with metatarsal guards, and hearing protection is mandatory safety equipment for this position.
- Lead personnel must have 10 or 30 hour training course in OSHA compliance. Know and abide by all rule and regulations of Spuncast and set examples of leadership including attitude, attendance and teamwork.
