Job Title: Laboratory Technician Assistant
Reports To: Metallurgist Coach
Job Summary:
The Laboratory Technician Assistant is responsible for supporting laboratory operations by preparing test specimens, maintaining equipment, performing quality control checks, and assisting with administrative tasks. This role ensures accurate and efficient processing of materials while maintaining a clean and safe workspace. This is a first-shift position, Monday – Friday, from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Key Responsibilities:
Material Processing & Equipment Operation:
- Identify and process test materials using a band saw.
- Coordinate with the laboratory team to prioritize test specimens and manage the disposal of unneeded materials.
- Perform daily and weekly cleaning to maintain the band saw in proper working condition.
- Develop proficiency in operating the lathe, drill press, and grinder for test specimen preparation as a backup to the lab technician.
- Operate tensile testers and Charpy impact testers as a backup to the lab technician.
Quality Control & Testing:
- Conduct accuracy checks on furnace instruments and document findings.
- Perform verifications on hardness testing equipment to ensure accurate results.
- Coordinate with the purchasing team to facilitate equipment recalibration services.
Facility & Equipment Maintenance:
- Inspect forklift oil levels and overall functionality on a daily basis. (This responsibility may be reassigned as needed.)
- Utilize floor-cleaning equipment, including sweepers and scrubbers, to maintain a clean workspace.
Support & Administrative Tasks:
- Assist the saw, blast, and heat treatment departments as needed.
- Enter data for heat treatment logs into the computer system accurately and efficiently.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of operating machinery such as band saws, lathes, and drill presses is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety and operational procedures.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications for data entry and documentation.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Standing, bending, and walking for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity to operate machinery and equipment.
Work Environment:
- Laboratory and manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, and machinery.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required as per safety guidelines.
