Overview

This position provides technical leadership and supervises construction engineering and management activities on construction projects, among other responsibilities.

Duties/Responsibilities

This position is responsible for the growth and delivery of Chicago Department of Transportation or Department of Water Management projects safely, on time, on budget, and of the highest quality for the client. Depending on the client and/or project, the Resident Engineer may be supported by additional team members such as Assistant Resident Engineer; Office Engineer(s), Project Controls staff, Quality/Safety Managers, Field inspectors, and other support staff to complete various tasks and activities. Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Assist the Director of Infrastructure on pursuit and team management.
  • Day-to-day management and delivery of project(s) or specific work scopes and supporting the Infrastructure team’s growth along with client representatives.
  • Oversee the contractors’ work activities and coordinate CM team members including subconsultant staff in delivery of the scope of services.
  • Verify overall contract compliance with contract requirements, manage documentation and track all project deliverables.
  • Understand, interpret, and make recommendations to the client regarding project plans, specifications and contract documents.
  • Lead the development of work plans or solutions for addressing technical, administrative and/or field issues within and pursuant to all project constraints, and anticipate, prevent, and solve complex problems to eliminate and/or reduce any impacts to the overall project delivery.
  • Review and route project deliverables including submittals, RFIs, contractor work plans, schedules, meeting minutes, etc. for review and acceptance by all required parties.
  • Coordinate and manage various project meetings, document outcomes and actions via meeting minutes.
  • Report to the project site based on client and project needs on short notice, including during daily construction activities, nights and/or weekend activities, and during any critical shutdown or outage work as dictated by the project schedule and/or client.
  • Participate in, or lead where applicable, all project start-up, planning, procurement, design development, pre-construction, and construction meetings.
  • Coordinate with CM team members to verify activities are covered and monitored appropriately.
  • Lead the contractor’s invoice review process and oversee all schedule management, project controls, and change management activities.
  • Report project status to stakeholders, create and maintain any logs, reports, or other documentation to aid in project reporting and delivery.
  • Manage all project closeout activities including processing closeout documentation such as warranties, O&Ms, as-built/record drawings, punch list creation and completion of all final change management and invoicing documentation.
  • Lead the client interaction and coordination between internal and external project stakeholders.
  • Engage with and/or be responsive to the client, manage the clients’ expectations relative to the project and SQN’s overall standing while maintaining a high level of professionalism and striving for the highest level of client satisfaction.
  • Other duties as required by the project, client, or SQN business needs.

 

Qualifications / Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience working on civil construction projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated process execution skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Effective problem-solving with the ability to efficiently switch between tasks productively.
  • Proven ability to consistently meet deadlines in a complex environment.
  • Illinois Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is required, having a Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Construction Manager (CCM) is a plus.
  • Illinois Municipal Public Works, Chicago Department of Water Management, and/or Chicago Department of Transportation experience is required.
  • Certified in IDOT’s Documentation of Contract Quantities.
