The University of Alabama in Huntsville is seeking qualified applicants for the Grant Writer vacancy. Working closely under the direction of the Vice President for Access, Connections and Engagement (VPOACE), the Grant Writer will play a pivotal role in writing proposals, grants, and reports for agencies, foundations, and corporate donors / funders of strategies and initiatives that advance UAH’s goals of recruiting, retaining and graduating students. The position will primarily involve the identification of potential funding sources, developing proposals, and coordinating the Office for Access, Connections and Engagement (OACE) team members, faculty, and staff to ensure successful proposal submissions. In addition to the VPOACE, the Grant Writer will also work closely with the Office of Research Sponsored Programs and Institutional Advancement to advance the acquisition of grants and donations to support strategic goals.

Some of the duties and responsibilities include :

  • Writing letters of inquiry, proposals, grants, and reports for foundation and corporate funders / donors.
  • Writing and / or building proposals for philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other organizations in conjunction with the OACE team.
  • Writing case statements, correspondence, reports, and other written documents.
  • Coordinating and facilitating stakeholder planning sessions to identify project design and other elements to meet the requirements of funding agencies.
  • Editing, revising, and amending proposals as needed and maintaining version control.
  • Creating communication support materials, including templates, boilerplate language, and other documents for proposal or fundraising efforts.
  • Producing reports and other documentation relevant to the status of proposals, awarded grants, etc.
  • Securing federal, state, and local funds for OACE strategies and initiatives.
  • Researching, analyzing, and compiling data from professional reports, scholarly articles, and other sources in support of grant proposal preparation.
  • Understanding proposal requirements, including but not limited to the use of funds, alignment with funding agency priorities, formatting, fonts, styles, margins, citations, etc., and ensuring adherence to the same.
  • Developing strategies to solicit large-scale funding from relevant organizations and individuals in response to notices of funding opportunities.
  • Collaborating with campus departments for curating content and collecting information from various sources, including campus leaders, to create proposals.
  • Creating and / or identifying appropriate logic models, work plans, evaluation processes, evidence-based practices, outcomes, and assessment tools.
  • Participating in various workshops and professional development opportunities on writing proposals, formulating ideas, and meaningfully engaging stakeholder communities.
  • Conducting research and background information from various sources to move proposal ideas from concept to submission.
  • Coordinating timely processes for exploring, planning, writing, and submission of proposals.
  • Working closely with OSP or Institutional Advancement staff, as appropriate.
  • Understanding OACE objectives and effectively translating this information into proposals aligned with OACE goals of recruiting, retaining, and graduating students.
  • Attending OACE team meetings, strategic convenings, and participating in discussions with donors / funders as needed and / or appropriate.
  • Staying abreast of local, state, and federal funding trends and opportunities.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the VP for Access, Connections, and Engagement.

Minimum qualifications include : a Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of grant writing experience; 5 or more years of grant writing experience is preferred. The incumbent must have strong written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, and must show strong attention to detail. Demonstrated project management skills are required. The incumbent must be a positive and collaborative team player with a high degree of initiative, alacrity, and self-discipline. Experience writing and supporting multiple projects simultaneously is preferred. The ability to speak to and work with a broad array of internal and external stakeholders is desired. A demonstrated ability to create compelling proposals aimed at various sponsors including federal, state, local agencies, corporations, private foundations, and donors is preferred. The ability to balance competing priorities is desired. Excellent research, grammar, spelling, and proofreading skills are preferred. Demonstrated success in securing grant funding, sponsorship, and donations is desired. Knowledge of university administrative processes and procedures is preferred. The approximate starting salary is $48,000 - $52,500 and includes a competitive benefits package.
