Summary/Objective:
The Superintendent is responsible for directing and coordinating the operations of discharge, load, and departure of assigned transportation, while guaranteeing quality, security, safety and efficiency in accordance with relevant operational and technical parameters. The Superintendent is the first line supervisor of the operations management team and is responsible for the direction and supervision of union labor. While maintaining a positive working relationship with labor, the Superintendent is to set the standard and be held accountable for a safe, damage free, and efficient operation. The Superintendent is often the only member of management interacting with labor while working a ship and must represent the interests of SSA while supervising the union labor.

Essential Responsibilities:
- Supervises all personnel, including company labor and contract labor, in proper operating procedures, and as needed will counsel labor, discipline and/or make termination recommendations to ensure an efficient operation within the definition of the labor agreement.
- Enforces productivity levels by supervising workers in within the terminal operation and a follow up assessment prior to shift end.
- Ensures availability of equipment and personnel required for timely completion of scheduled vessel operations, and that staff and equipment are fully utilized, optimize resources utilization and uptime to meet the economic performance indicators, and assist as necessary with other required tasks to turn the vessel around within specific time.
- Prior to vessel arriving review all documents associated with operations and make sure all equipment and gear is ready prior to starting operations.
- Plans, designs, and implements rigging arrangements.
- Plans, holds, and documents daily safety meetings; partnering with Area Health, Safety & Environment to understand and train longshore workers to adhere to safety procedures while implementing plans to address safety hazards.
- Responsible for knowledge and the compliance under HAZMAT and OSHA Regulations. This would include reporting any incidents to the supervisory immediately.
- Ensure that all required personnel are wearing Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), such as safety vest, safety toe boots, safety glasses and protective hard hat, when applicable.
- Responsible for investigation and reporting damages and liabilities to the appropriate management and authorities.
- Complete damage reports accurately and report & review any incidents and/or issues to appropriate Manager of the operation to understand risk analysis and liability.
- Serves as a key coordinator between all parties, vessels, customers, agents and labor.
- Oversees and ensures that all policies and procedures are being managed efficiently and effectively.
- Visually inspect areas for hazards and bring all inquiries to management.
- May be required to verify all cargo is loaded/discharged safely, damage free and efficiently and within regulations.
- Informs management of any issues related to proper staffing of ILWU personnel.
- Participate in hiring, discipline, and documentation as well as termination process for ILWU employees.
- Enforces and follows plans, requirements, and orders.
- Responsible for investigation and reporting damages and liabilities to the appropriate management and authorities.
- Responsible for collection of all stevedoring gear, safety gear, and radios at completion of vessel gangs.
- Develop and maintain business relationships with all customers.
- Meet with customers to discuss and understand their requirements, concerns and expectations.
- Assist Manager is training staff
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent work experience.
- At least 3 years managing labor preferred.
- Extensive rigging expertise, including load/stress and calculation skills.
- Thorough knowledge or principles of vessel and terminal operations
- Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
- Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired
- Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules.
- Required to observe all safety and health requirements for vessel and terminal environment.
- Knowledge of the PCMSC, PCLCD, PCCCD and PCWBFM.
- TWIC card Required.

- Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures of hot and cold, extremely dusty conditions and occasionally, conditions of high levels of noise.
