What are the responsibilities and job description for the Superintendent position at SSA Pacific, Inc?
The Superintendent is responsible for directing and coordinating the operations of discharge, load, and departure of assigned transportation, while guaranteeing quality, security, safety and efficiency in accordance with relevant operational and technical parameters. The Superintendent is the first line supervisor of the operations management team and is responsible for the direction and supervision of union labor. The Superintendent is often the only member of management interacting with labor while working a ship and must represent the interests of SSA while supervising the union labor.
Essential Responsibilities:
Requirements:
- Supervises personnel in proper operating procedures, and counsels, disciplines, and/or makes termination decisions as needed to ensure a safe and efficient operation while working within the restrictions of the labor agreement. The Superintendents termination decisions are subject to review by higher management.
- Enforces productivity levels by supervising workers in within the terminal operation and a follow up assessments prior to shift end.
- This position may be required to travel to other ports in the Pacific Northwest and work commodities as needed.
- Plans, holds and documents daily safety meetings.
- Responsible for the compliance under HAZMAT and OSHA Regulations. This would include reporting any incidents to the supervisory immediately.
- Ensure that all required personnel are wearing Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), such as safety vest, safety toe boots, safety glasses and protective hard hat, when applicable.
- Responsible for investigation and reporting damages and liabilities to the appropriate management and authorities.
- Complete damage reports accurately and report & review any incidents and/or issues to appropriate Manager of the operation to understand risk analysis and liability.
- Serves as a key coordinator between all parties, vessels, customers, agents and labor.
- Oversees and ensures that all policies and procedures are being managed efficiently and effectively.
- Visually inspect areas for hazards and bring all inquiries to management.
- May be required to verify all cargo is loaded/discharged efficiently and within regulations.
- Work with Dispatchers and/or Union halls to staff accordingly.
- Partner with management in hiring, discipline and documentation as well as termination process for employees.

Qualifications:
- High school diploma
- Two (2) year degree or equivalent experience working in operations preferred
- Three (3) years management experience, union labor experience a plus
- Able to maintain a valid driver license and TWIC card
- Thorough knowledge or principles of terminal operations
- Experience with computerized operating systems
- Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
- Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired
- Required to observe all safety and health requirements.

- Must be able to work in varying shifts, days, evenings and nights.
- Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures of hot and cold, extremely dusty conditions and occasionally, conditions of high levels of noise.

Compensation: $82,000 - $100,000
