Description
Objective: To foster a dynamic environment that fosters, promotes, and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and physical fitness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness.
- Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, and fundamentals of body movement.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, safe environment in the physical education areas.
- Provide safety instructions and make safety checks on equipment and fitness areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
- Provide maximum participation for all students by utilizing a variety of teaching methods to meet the needs of students with diverse ability levels.
- Provide ongoing feedback to students to help them develop their fitness level.
- Monitor students’ progress, strengths, and weaknesses, and communicate these when necessary to parents/guardians and administrators.
- Develop intramural sports, events, and activities to meet the needs of students and student interest.
- Coordinate intramural registration, payments, and oversee intramural rosters.
- Order all necessary intramural equipment and inventory upon approval of the Director of Athletics.
- Supervise all intramural activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship.
- Coordinate and lead training of intramural coaches and officials.
- Ensure all intramural coaches have current background screenings.
- Communicate effectively and timely with parents/guardians, administrators, and faculty as needed.
- Schedule events and facilities.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the lower school and athletic department.
- Attend and contribute in full, divisional, and departmental faculty meetings.
- Take an active role in professional activities and attend relevant professional meetings and conferences.
- Stay abreast of the latest advances in physical fitness education and coaching.
Work Environment:
Physical demands include:
- Ability to demonstrate the appropriate skills and techniques to be used by the students.
- Ability to visually monitor students.
- Ability to operate fitness equipment.
- Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 25 lbs.), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, and moving equipment/boxes (up to 25 lbs.)
Position Type:
This is a full-time position with teaching responsibilities from August – May. As with any independent school, teachers should be ready to chaperone class trips, perform typical day-to-day duties such as lunch and carpool duties, and engage fully in all school events that develop the student.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in physical education or related field required.
- A minimum of three years teaching experience preferred.
- Experience in fitness programming for lower school students.
- First aid, CPR, and AED certifications required.
- Represent the school in the larger community in a positive manner that reflects the values of the school.
- Ability to interface and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, administrators, and parents/guardians.
- Professional written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Google Suite required.
