Primary Responsibilities
Classroom Culture & Management:
- Deliberately develop a safe and inclusive learning environment where each student is known, loved, challenged and inspired.
- Maintain standards of student behavior and practice classroom management that center around our core values of respect, responsibility and compassion.
- Consciously build a classroom culture that actively embraces students of all backgrounds.
- Manage behavior, intervene and communicate with parents, the Dean of Student Life, Head of Middle School and student advisors as needed.
- Teach Social Studies to two sections of 7th graders with a focus on U.S. history from 1783-1973.
- Teach Social Studies to two sections of 8th graders with a focus on world geography and world history.
- Through all classes, develop skills and measure progress in the following areas: critical thinking, persuasive writing, text and document analysis, cause-effect and main idea identification and research.
- Plan and deliver effective, innovative, engaging, developmentally appropriate student-centered history and social studies lessons.
- Integrate opportunities for students to develop high school prep skills, including: presentations, debate, discussions, writing & revision, test preparation and research.
- Differentiate instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying abilities and backgrounds as well as provide frequent support and extensions as needed.
- Deliver instruction and materials that are aligned with our Episcopal identity and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging mission of the school.
- Through clear and consistent communication, build partnerships with parents that center around mutual trust in order to best support students’ growth and well-being.
- Establish collaborative, collegial and supportive working relationships with other faculty and staff.
- Serve as an advisor for up to 10 middle school students.
- Serve as the lead homeroom teacher for up to 18 middle school students.
- Within the above two roles, lead activities and curriculum focused on: community building, social emotional learning, metacognition and inclusion & belonging.
- Lead student/parent conferences with parents of advisees twice annually.
- Lead a co-curricular program such as: Student Council, Junior Model U.N., Geography Bee, National History Day, Debate Team or School Newspaper.
- Complete thorough and thoughtful report cards three times a year.
- Attend and supervise students at cyclical school-day Episcopal chapel services as well as school events and activities outside of the school day.
- Plan and chaperone grade level field trips.
- Participate in regular team meetings during the school day and bi-weekly faculty meetings after school.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, such as recess monitoring, lunch duty, study hall proctoring, etc.
Preferred Qualifications – Candidates Will Possess
- A Bachelor’s Degree in history, education or a related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
- At least 3-5 years of relevant teaching/classroom experience with middle school students.
- Knowledge of best practices in both instruction and curriculum development for seventh and eighth grade social studies and history.
- Knowledge of U.S. history, geography and world history as well as related topics in diversity, equity inclusion and belonging.
