HIRING FOR 2025-26 SCHOOL YEAR. THIS POSITION STARTS ON AUGUST 1, 2025
OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:
St. Benedict’s Middle School Program serves students in 5th – 8th grades. The English teacher is given the duty of leading the classroom in instructing students on such a level as to allow them to obtain proficiency in their subject area at a grade appropriate level. Responsible for creating lesson plans, managing a positive classroom atmosphere, collaborating with middle school faculty, planning integrated STEAM units, and creating a comprehensive instructional English program. Reports to Middle School Principal.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach English daily to students in either 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th Grade.
- Execute comprehensive instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- Develop students' critical reading and writing skills through cooperative group work, discussion, in-class writing, peer editing, and presentation opportunties.
- Integrate grammar and vocabulary instruction into weekly lessons.
- Lead a homeroom and the duties that come with being a homeroom teacher.
- Partner with the Middle School Principal in planning scope and sequence for the English curriculum for appropriate grade.
- Engage with students in a positive way and assure the well-being and safety of all students.
- Exhibit a genuine nurturing, caring attitude to all children.
- Maintain positive management of the learning environment.
- Monitor and manage students’ behavior, including appropriate enforcement of student conduct expectations.
- Maintain a cooperative attitude of working together with the other teachers, volunteers, parents, and program specialists in planning and implementing activities.
- Develop and implement written lesson plans.
- Use differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
- Use a variety of assessment strategies to formally and informally assess each student.
- Maintain accurate, complete and appropriate records and files for each student.
- Communicate student progress with parents at parent-teacher conference time and regularly as required throughout the year.
- Provide adequate information, plans and materials for substitute teachers.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and other assigned meetings and school activities according to school policy.
- Assume full responsibility for supervision of students in out-of-class settings, such as field trips or recess.
- Maintain composure during stressful situations.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and school matters.
- Maintain a professional demeanor in dealings with parents, students, and colleagues.
- Model appropriate behavior in speech and actions
- Model professional and ethical standards and practices consistent with school policies when dealing with students, parents, and colleagues in both speech and actions.
- Be evaluated throughout the year through informal and formal classroom observation.
- Be open to commendations and recommendations throughout the year through informal and formal classroom observation.
- Participate in training and professional development; including annual goal setting with supervisor.

- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School, Assistant Head of School or Middle School Principal such as carpool, lunch coverage, chapel check ins, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in English or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Three to five years teaching experience at the middle school level, preferably in an independent school setting.
- Strong knowledge in subject matter.
- Georgia Teaching Certification a plus.
- Working knowledge of Google Classroom and Google documents.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office or other similar programs; Renweb experience a plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Must work well individually and as part of a small team; ability to interact collaboratively with parents, students and administration.
- Passionate about working with and inspiring students.
- Superior time management skills and the ability to consistently meet deadlines and be flexible.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time while instructing; excellent hearing abilities; physical ability to transport students from one area of a building/campus to another; physical ability to move into different learning spaces.
