SCC invites qualified candidates to apply for the Full-Time Fixed Term Faculty: Political Science position to begin Spring 2025 for the 2024-2025 academic year only. This position will be responsible for developing and teaching political science courses. Courses are delivered through multiple modalities including online, hybrid, and in-person. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, student learning, assessment, and the use of technology in the delivery of instruction to improve student learning outcomes. Will also demonstrate the use of varied teaching techniques that help students develop critical thinking, research skills and understand the relevance of political science in their lives. The successful candidate will participate in professional development, engage in assessment activities, attend faculty and committee meetings, and perform other duties as assigned. The position is an on-site position requiring campus presence. The Political Science faculty reports to the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Introduce and present important disciplinary (political science) concepts in a clear and logical manner to students.
  • Effectively prepare and present course content, drawing upon disciplinary knowledge, skills, theories, issues, research, and applications to design engaging and effective learning experiences.
  • Assess student progress and learning through various means, including quizzes, tests/exams, and/or written assignments.
  • Demonstrate multicultural competence, including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations, and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity and diversity.
  • Participate in the review and revision of curriculum/materials as necessary and as approved within college guidelines.
  • Provide quality instruction in various settings (classroom, online) adapting to a variety of teaching/learning situations while maintaining an effective learning environment.
  • Seek and promote opportunities for student learning and critical thinking.
  • Provide individualized support to promote student success.
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to students in a timely manner, including the grading of assignments.
  • Maintain currency of course content and materials, including course syllabi.
  • Participate in college workgroups as needed.
  • Participate in divisional and/or college meetings as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain office hours; be available for student consultation.
  • Perform ongoing student, program, and college assessment activities, including analysis of course assessments, evaluations, and data to engage in continuous improvement to enhance student success, retention, and completion.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in Political Science or related field or 18 hours of successful coursework in political science.
  • Professional practice/work-experience in political science or closely related field.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Success in being a collaborative and respectful team member.
  • Exceptional communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctoral degree (i.e., PhD) in Political Science or related field.
  • Experience in curriculum development and assessment.
  • Experience working with a diverse population.
  • Expertise using a Learning Management System such as Canvas and using technology to enhance student learning.

Salaries: Instructor $58,315, Assistant Professor $64,238, Associate Professor $70,620

The academic rank will be assessed at the time of hire based on years of experience and education based on pre-determined criteria.
