POSITION OVERVIEW: The Department Clinical Educator partners with the department leadership and Clinical Practice and Professional Development (CPPD) to support the clinical practice, continuing education and professional development of the clinical caregivers within this service line. Focuses on the development of nurses, including new to practice. Collaborates with leadership regarding a wide range of issues including; competency verification, training plans, developing caregivers in the coordination of patient care from admission through discharge in support of the medical and nursing plans of care. This nursing position works to promote excellence in professional practice that is in alignment with departmental and enterprise-wide standards, initiatives, and goals. This position does not directly manage other caregivers, however, may be asked to review and provide feedback on the work of other caregivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: The Department Clinical Educator is multifaceted, encompassing educational leadership, mentoring, quality improvement, and patient safety. By providing healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills, clinical educators contribute to improving patient care and outcomes in acute care settings.

Clinical Competence: Assess clinical competence through direct observation, skills checklists, and evaluations, providing ongoing constructive feedback, identifying areas for improvement, and developing personalized learning plans to enhance the skills of individual staff members in partnership with department leadership. Curriculum Development: Develop individualized educational learning plans and resources that align with the specific needs of the clinical setting. Consider factors such as patient population, technology, evidence-based practices, and regulatory requirements. Mentoring and Support: Serve as mentors, providing guidance and support to caregivers as they navigate complex clinical situations. Help develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication strategies. Patient Safety: Emphasize the importance of patient safety and infection control measures to prevent medical errors and ensure a safe care environment. Provide training on proper procedures for handling emergencies and high-risk situations. Change Management: Demonstrate knowledge of change theory and apply principles to support change within service line. Ethical Practices and Clear Communication: Integrate ethical principles in all areas of practice. Communicates clearly, respectfully, and responsively as to their needs, concerns etc. and follows up with Supervisor or Manager as applicable.

Ensure that service line educational programs are in alignment with organizational mission, values, and goals.

Coordinate special projects as assigned.

Alerts nurse manager or Supervisor to actual or potential issues or problems in a timely manner related to specific service.

Completes department-specific and annual competencies on time. Participates in own evaluation.

Supports the vision, mission and values of the organization in all respects.

Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests.

Supports the Lean principles of continuous improvement with energy and enthusiasm, functioning as a champion of change.


Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the organization’s corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violation of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all organizational investigations and proceedings.

Delivers customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate.

Participates in creating a healing environment that supports all aspects of the care environment and the wholeness of each individual, patient and caregiver.

Participates in creating intentional relationships and demonstrates focus attitudes and behaviors that enhance the care experience.

Provides a therapeutic presence in service to others by purposefully responding to the needs of patients in a caring way, including introducing oneself and explaining role in patient’s care, asking the patient his or her preferred name, sitting with the patient to determine his or her care goals, active listening, and communicating effectively and appropriately through touch, eye contact, etc.

Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests.

Documents all patient care with proficiency in compliance with hospital policies, procedures and regulatory agencies.

Calculates dosages and administers medications accurately in accordance with St. Charles Health System policies and procedures for medication administration.

May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.

EDUCATION


Required
: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

Preferred: Master’s Degree in Nursing

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

Required: Current Oregon RN license.

Department specific certification within 6 months of hire. (i.e., NIHSS)

National certification within 1 year of hire. (i.e., CMSRN)

AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification.

Preferred: ACLS, department specific specialty certification. (i.e., chemo certification)


EXPERIENCE

Required: Three years of clinical experience in specified area within the last five years.

Preferred: Experience as a nurse educator or managing education, competency, onboarding or fellowship/resident preparation.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Continually (75% or more): Sitting, keyboard operation, use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.

Frequently (50%): Standing, lifting 1-10 pounds, grasping/squeezing.

Occasionally (25%): Bending, reaching overhead, carrying/pushing or pulling 1-10 pounds.

Rarely (10%): Walking, stooping/kneeling/crouching, climbing stairs.

Never (0%): Climbing ladder/stepstool, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 11-50 pounds, operation of a motor vehicle, ability to hear whispered speech level.

Never (0%): Heat, cold, wet/slippery area, noise, dust, vibration, chemical solution, uneven surface.
