Job Summary About the Role
Deliver high quality recreation services for residents, visitors and the St. Charles community by adhering to the Districts safety and administrative policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
This position is well suited for someone with a friendly and positive personality who is productive and shows initiative, is an effective written and oral communicator, is reliable and safety-minded
Required: Thorough knowledge of positive leadership techniques, childrens activities and games, developmental learning progressions, and appropriate discipline techniques. A minimum of two years of completed undergraduate studies in Elementary Education, Early Childhood, Recreation, or related field. Maintain First Aid/CPR/AED certification or obtain certification within 30 days of hire. Maintain DCFS Mandated reporter training or obtain certification training within 30 days of hire.
Preferred: Undergraduate degree in Elementary Education, Early Childhood, Recreation, or related field is preferred. A minimum of one year in a supervisory role and one year as a day camp counselor or similar position preferred.
Preferred Schedule per Camp Assigment:
- Day Camp Grades 1-4: 5-day schedule, Monday-Friday, availability from 7:45am-3:45pm with scheduled after camp shifts as needed (until 6pm).
- Day Camp 5th Grade: 5-day schedule, Monday-Friday, availability from 7:45am-3:45pm with scheduled after camp shifts as needed (until 6pm).
- Flex Camp: 5-day schedule, Monday-Friday, availability from 8am-3:15pm with scheduled before or after camp shift(s) as needed
Essential Functions of the Position
Park District Cornerstones
- Follow all departmental safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of Park Districts safety and risk management program.
- Work cooperatively and collaboratively with residents, colleagues, the public, PDRMA and other agencies or organizations as delegated.
- Recommends improvements and efficiencies to better accomplish individual and district goals in the best interests of the St. Charles Park District community.
- Comply with park district policies and administrative procedures.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Superintendent of Recreation, the Assistant Superintendent of Recreation, and the Recreation Supervisor, the Day Camp Lead shall complete all assigned duties to the best of their abilities, offering suggestions of better ways to accomplish jobs and be ever mindful of the best interests of the St. Charles Park District and of fellow employees. This position requires extensive knowledge and ability to:
- Possess and exhibit the desire to work with children and the ability to interact with children in a positive manner.
- Serve as a Park District representative, provide leadership and work effectively with the public, program participants, parents, and community groups and organizations.
- Actively plan, organize, execute, and directly supervise the childrens programs at any day camp locations.
- Provide positive, professional role modeling to staff and participants.
- Assist counselors with the development and preparation of age-appropriate curriculum activities.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Work with parents, resolve problems and deal with individuals and situations in a respectful, positive, sensitive and mature manner.
- Work in typically unstructured settings and situations using a positive and enthusiastic attitude, imagination, and innovative techniques combined with solid leadership qualities.
- Follow department protocols and Park District policies.
- Be timely and accurate with paperwork.
- Apply appropriate positive discipline techniques with children and provide training of the same to counselors.
- Maintain safeguards over protected, privileged or confidential information, verbal and written, to prevent unauthorized disclosures.
- Resolve problems with staff members in a respectful, positive, sensitive and mature manner.
- Solicit, assess and implement participant, parent and staff ideas into program activities.
- Ensure the safety of all campers and staff by following Park District Safety Guidelines.
- Perform first aid and CPR and execute emergency procedures as necessary.
- Attend weekend and evening trainings and/or orientations as required.
Marginal Functions of the Position
- Perform other related duties and/or special projects as assigned.
- Lift or move camp equipment and materials.
- Purchase supplies and equipment as needed.
