Job Summary – About the Role
Deliver high quality recreation services for residents, visitors and the St. Charles community by adhering to the District’s safety and administrative policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
This position is well suited for someone with a friendly and positive personality who is productive and shows initiative, is an effective written and oral communicator, is reliable and safety-minded.
Required: Minimum age of 16 years of age. Knowledge of positive leadership techniques, children’s activities and games, developmental learning progressions, and appropriate discipline techniques Maintain First Aid/CPR/AED certification or obtain certification within 30 days of hire. Maintain DCFS mandated reporter certificate or obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
Preferred: High School degree and/or successful completion of courses in Early Childhood Education preferred. A minimum of one year working with younger children in nursery and/or day care services preferred.
Essential Functions of the Position

- Follow all departmental safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of Park District’s safety and risk management program.
- Work cooperatively and collaboratively with residents, colleagues, the public, PDRMA and other agencies or organizations as delegated.
- Recommends improvements and efficiencies to better accomplish individual and district goals in the best interests of the St. Charles Park District community.
- Comply with park district policies and administrative procedures.
Responsibilities
Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent of Recreation, the Assistant Superintendent of Recreation – Norris Recreation Center, and the Membership Services Supervisor, the Child Care Attendant shall complete their assigned duties to the best of their abilities, offering suggestions of better ways to accomplish jobs and be ever mindful of the best interests of the St. Charles Park District, fellow colleagues, and community members. This position requires extensive knowledge and ability to:
- Possess and exhibit the desire to work with children and infants with the ability to interact with children in a positive manner.
- Lead small groups of children of all ages.
- Serve as a Park District representative, provide leadership and work effectively with the on-site instructors, parents, co-workers and supervisors.
- Actively plan, organize, execute, and directly supervise the assigned child care site.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Resolve problems and deal with families and situations in a respectful, positive, sensitive and mature manner.
- Work in typically unstructured settings and situations using a positive and enthusiastic attitude, imagination, and innovative techniques.
- Follow department protocols and Park District policies.
- Apply appropriate positive discipline techniques with children of all ages.
- Ensure the safety of all participants by 1) completing opening and closing procedures, 2) actively observing all children in attendance, 3) reporting needed information back to supervisor, 4) following all Park District Safety Guidelines.
- Perform first aid and CPR and execute emergency procedures as necessary.
- Attend trainings as required.
- Assume other responsibilities as assigned.
