Job Summary – About the Role
Deliver high quality recreation services for residents, visitors and the St. Charles community by adhering to the District’s safety and administrative policies and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
This position is well suited for someone with a friendly and positive personality who is productive and shows initiative, is an effective written and oral communicator, is reliable and safety-minded.
Required: A High School Diploma or in process. Minimum 16 years of age. Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work effectively with people with disabilities. Ability to establish a positive rapport by using tact and discretion with participants, parents, and staff. Display a high degree of emotional maturity while keeping difficult situations in proper perspective. Must be detail oriented with the ability to process information accurately, and use independent judgment when needed. Must have or complete CPR/AED/First Aid Certification and Mandated Reporter certification prior to starting work and within 30 days of hire date.
Preferred: Previous experience working with children is preferred.
Essential Functions of the Position or Role
Park District Cornerstones
- Follow all departmental safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of Park District’s safety and risk management program.
- Work cooperatively and collaboratively with residents, colleagues, the public, PDRMA and other agencies or organizations as delegated.
- Recommends improvements and efficiencies to better accomplish individual and district goals in the best interests of the St. Charles Park District community.
- Comply with park district policies and administrative procedures.
Responsibilities
Under the direction and supervision of Superintendent of Recreation, Assistant Superintendent of Recreation, Aquatics, RVMG and Haines Manager, Aquatics and Youth Programs Supervisor, and the Sensory Cove Swim Lesson Coordinator, the Sensory Cove Swim Instructor shall complete assigned duties to the best of their abilities, offering suggestions of better ways to accomplish jobs and be ever mindful of the best interests of the St. Charles Park District and of fellow employees. This position requires extensive knowledge and ability to:
- Demonstrate ability to work independently or with limited direction; anticipate needs of students for successful learn to swim program.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude while performing duties, and while on park district premises. Abide by uniform standards while on duty.
- Maintain communication and quality customer service towards participants, parents/guardians, staff, and the general public as a representative of the St. Charles Park District and For Scout.
- Be available to work all four shifts in each session. Secure a substitute for any scheduled hours that cannot be worked.
- Properly utilize all swim lesson equipment and supplies.
- Ability to engage in activities requiring physical exertion and appropriate touching to assist the participant’s progress.
- Create and effectively implement lesson plans appropriate to program level and participant’s abilities. This can include but not limited to:
- Modeling and breaking down instructions for comprehension and understanding
- Modifying activities and using adaptive equipment to promote accessibility
- Facilitating and encouraging social interaction between individuals with and without disabilities.
- Promoting positive behaviors through the use of coping skills, behavior plans, reinforcement of safety rules, and other positive behavior interventions.
- Provide feedback for Sensory Cove program participant’s progress each session.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist in daily cleaning of assigned areas. Help maintain overall cleanliness of facility.
- Continue education by attending staff meetings and trainings.
- Follow all safety procedures that pertain to duties involved and support all aspects of the Park District Safety Program.
- Recognize, report, and respond to any unsafe conditions and execute effective emergency action plans.
- Maintain and carry out all State, City and County Health Departments, professional certifications, and Park District rules and regulations pertaining to related area.
Marginal Responsibilities
- Perform other related duties and/or special projects as assigned.
