Work Schedule:  Wednesday-Friday
8:00am-6:30pm and every Saturday 7:30am-6:00pm (4-10's)

Hourly Wage: $26.51-29.53 
Full Range:  $26.51-41.63


 

Mechanic

Primary Objective of Position

The Mechanic is responsible for mechanical repair and maintenance of CNG, diesel, and gasoline transit vehicles and other mechanical equipment.

Essential Functions of the Position
Essential duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or logical to the position.
 
  1. Responsible for performing mechanical repairs of Metro Bus property
    1. Overhaul and repair CNG, diesel and gas motors, brakes, air units, electrical systems, hydraulic/kneeling systems, heating/air conditioning systems, remote heating units, and other mechanical equipment
    2. Diagnose operating difficulties and make repairs on a variety of hydraulic, engine, air and electrical systems
    3. Perform road calls and/or switch out buses when equipment fails. Trouble shoot, fix and repair buses roadside
    4. Occasionally, fabricate parts no longer available and periodic welding and iron work
    5. Monitor driver write-ups in computerized fleet maintenance system and perform repairs
 
  1. Responsible for preventative maintenance and repair of Metro Bus property
    1. Performs scheduled preventative maintance and repairs on CNG, dielse and gasoline transit vehicles
    2. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance and repairs on Metro Bus facilities, grounds and equipment
    3. Properly complete maintenance records and forms
 
  1. Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains respectful working relationships with coworkers and customers in carrying out job functions
 
  1. Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices
    1. Knows and follows safety rules and guidelines as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss
    2. Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work
    3. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed, makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner
 
  1. Performs other duties and activities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
The job requires a two (2) year degree or certification from a technical or community college or two (2) years of experience in automotive or heavy duty vehicle mechanics or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Must have, or be able to obtain within 90 days, a valid Class B Minnesota Driver License, with passenger and air brake endorsements, and current DOT medical certification.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required include:
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of light and heavy duty automotive or mechanical equipment
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  • Ability to interpret and work efficiently from maintenance manuals, charts, electrical and hydraulic schematics, or written and oral instructions
  • Proficient in the use of computers and electronic diagnostic programs
  • Must be able to read and speak English well enough to read technical documents and effectively communicate with team members. Bilingual a plus
  • Must possess standard mechanic’s tools
  • Ability to work flexible work schedules including late evenings, early mornings and weekends
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and or convey information, receive work direction, and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees, committees and groups; and to diffuse situations/conversations that have escalated beyond normal limits
  • Ability to maintain a valid Class B Minnesota Driver License, with passenger and air brake endorsements, and a current DOT medical certificate
 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with transit vehicles and systems
 

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  1. This position is predominately in a maintenance shop environment requiring extended periods of walking, climbing, stopping, kneeling, crawling and reaching
  2. Some exposure to temperature extremes, moderate exposure to noise, physical and/or chemical hazards
  3. Utilizes personal computer, phone and other office equipment on a regular basis;
  4. Will require limited travel outside of the maintenance shop. Will primarily utilize a Metro Bus vehicle for travel
