40Job Summary:
Responsible for ordering, set up, billing and preparation of alcohol-fixed, formalin-fixed and fresh bio-hazardous tissue for evaluation by the Cytology, Histology and Pathology staff. Serves as liaison for an extensive variety of inside and outside customers and must demonstrate resourcefulness and teamwork with a comprehensive knowledge of hospital departments and services. Must gather necessary information for service and billing, including interpretation and transcription of physician orders and LIS/HIS order entry.Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.
Job Description:
- Assist in gross examination of surgical and autopsy tissue, cut, stain, and coverslip frozen sections. Ensure specimen integrity by obtaining appropriate patient identification, data collection, specimen collection by using knowledge of medical terminology and Anatomy. Disinfect cryostats as needed. Rotate and change reagents on all Histology tissue processors as required and performs weekly PM.
- Extensive use of HIS & LIS computer systems to accession specimens, order and verify processing and billing tasks, receive transferred specimens, search Millennium and EPIC for orders and print labels.
- Registration of Ambulatory patients in EPIC and releasing provider orders in EPIC
- Disposes of surgical tissue, autopsy tissue, Cytology specimens, prepares limbs and fetuses for burial using appropriate PPE and chemical safety guidelines to insure a safe working environment.
- Prepares specimens, organizes specimen documentation and billing info and communicates with reference labs: ERA/PRA, muscle biopsies, renal tumor protocol, GOG studies and slides for consultation to facilitate patient diagnosis.
- File slides, inventory supplies and restock daily, give Supervisor order form for supplies before running out, put away Lab stock, assist with maintaining supplies and stains
- Enhances professional growth and development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community and students by participation in continuing education, in-service training and the School of medical Technology. Implements iCARE principles using communication skills and human relations to promote quality patient care and productive working environment.
- Review, document and sign-off all QC/QM documents for AP equipment and processes. Responsible for maintaining quality monitors within manufacturer guidelines and instituting appropriate corrective measures when needed.
- Troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance on all AP equipment, responsible for contacting Clinical Engineering or Technical Service when needed, maintain file of all Service Call documents.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- High School Diploma
Specialized Knowledge:
- Medical terminology, Good knowledge of Anatomy, good computer skills, extensive problem solving skills, excellent customer service and excellent communication skills
Kind and Length of Experience:
- 1 year experience in Anatomic Pathology or Medical Lab experience
