Provide leadership and supervision for assigned surgical specialty area twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Responsible for management of the department which includes assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care, in accordance with accepted nursing standards, nursing practice, and AORN Recommended Practices.Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with all patients, families, visitors and other employees regardless of cultural background.
Job Description:
Nursing Process
- Utilizes the nursing process and functions as the patient advocate for the patients plan of care based on an accurate/concise patient assessment.
- Demonstrates management/leadership skills by assisting Nurse Manager in directing clinical activities. Responsible for managing/monitoring the daily surgical case schedule and ensuring adequate staffing to meet the needs of the department in delivery of patient care. Collaborates with scheduling staff to plan/assess surgical case schedule.
- Performs duties of Charge Nurse as needed/assigned.
- Completes performance appraisals and counseling/disciplinary action as needed. Assists with establishing, implementing and evaluating departmental goals consistent with organizational mission, vision, values and strategic plans.
- As assigned, in the absence of the Nurse Manager, is operationally responsible for the department and for the quality-of-care 24/7. Functions as the circulator or scrub nurse as needed.
Professional and Technical Skills
- Demonstrates professionalism as a perioperative nurse.
- Ensures ongoing personal growth and development.
- Under the supervision of the surgeon, may suture skin layer closed.
- Knowledgeable of aseptic techniques when functioning in the perioperative setting and functions in the role of circulating nurse and scrub nurse.
Patient Safety
- Knowledgeable of and properly administers medications in the perioperative setting. Maintains a safe environment for optimal patient outcomes.
- Performs and documents accurate and complete sponge, needle, sharps, and instrument counts.
Quality/Customer Service
- Documents perioperative course of care accurately and concisely.
- Participates in performance improvement activities and utilizes data to positively impact patient outcomes.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service skills in dealing with patients, visitors, and health care team members.
Financial Accountability
- Financial accountable for efficient cost-effective utilization of equipment/supplies.
- Ensures accurate completion of the patient charging process, including preoperative and pre-anesthesia equipment and supplies.
On-Call Responsibilities
- Required to be on Management call as scheduled and respond in the required time frame as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Credentials, Licenses:
- BSN
- Graduate of accredited school of Nursing
- Licensed to practice nursing in the State where work is being performed.
- Meets contact hour requirements for licensure, including all state required courses.
Specialized Knowledge:
Expert knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, equipment, and supply needs for the day-to-day surgical caseload. Ability to assess patient needs and evaluate nursing care and personnel performance. Able to direct self and others. Knowledge of nursing standards, policies, and procedures.
Kind and Length of Experience:
Two years of experience in clinical area of responsibility required. Experience relevant to the specific clinical area(s).
