About the Role

The Clinical Educator plays a crucial role in developing the necessary skills and competencies for the clinical teams at St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii. In this role, the Clinical Educator demonstrates clinical competency according to the standards of nursing practice within clinical specialty. The Clinical Educator is responsible for the development and implementation of required clinical courses and educational opportunities for relevant clinical staff. The Clinical Educator works closely with management to identify educational needs of nursing staff. Utilizing their advanced knowledge, skills, and experience. The Clinical Educator functions as an expert clinician and consultant to staff, patients and families.

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Demonstrates clinical expertise by applying current knowledge and research in a variety of care settings.
  • Assesses current practice patterns; promotes innovative approaches to problem-solving and evaluates the effectiveness of new approaches when current practice is ineffective.
  • Facilitates inter-departmental and interpersonal communication, interacting positively with physicians, nurses, administration and other members of the health care team.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of nursing practice, patient care standards and Joint Commission readiness. Assists staff to integrate these standards in daily patient care.
  • Provides leadership to influence changes in clinical practice and serves as a resource to the health care team.
  • Works directly with staff to promote and provide continuity of care across all departments.
  • May assume direct patient care assignments when needed to maintain clinical skills and at other times when necessary to support patient care requirements.
  • Maintains all required competencies.
  • Maintains 24-hour responsibility as a clinical resource.
  • Coordinates development, design, implementation, and evaluation of orientation programs for clinical staff.
  • Evaluates the nursing orientation program based on adult learning principles in collaboration with the nursing administration team.
    Orientation and training, includes Electronic Medical Record (EMR) application, Hospice Information Set (HIS), Conditions of Participation (COPs), Joint Commission (JC), skills competency, customer service, end-of-life care, and other topics as discussed with the management team and the staff.
    Documents progress of orientation and provides ongoing information to the Management Team.
  • Acts as a consultant promoting the safe, efficient and competent performance of orientees.
  • Acts as a liaison with educational institutions, may serve as a clinical preceptor.
  • PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

Educational Requirement:

  • Current State of Hawaii RN License, Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
  • Master's degree in nursing preferred.
  • Clinical focus as Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist, preferred.
  • National certification in appropriate specialty recommended.

Job Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years basic nursing experience in appropriate clinical specialty. Four (4) years previous experience, preferred.
  • Experience in educational program planning, development and evaluation.

Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, word processing and data analysis.
  • Flexibility regarding scheduling and work assignments.
  • Strong leadership, teaching, coaching and group/team interaction skills.
  • Ability to promote change process in a positive and supportive manner.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license for the State of Hawaii required.
  • Reliable personal car available for work.
  • Must possess the required automobile insurance coverage and satisfactory driving record.

COMMUNICATION AND CONTACTS

Requires contacts both inside and outside at all organizational levels. Requires considerable tact, discretion and persuasion to obtain results. May present new methods, programs, controversial issues. Improper handling may affect operating results and/or patient care delivery.
