A church sexton is responsible for the overall maintenance and cleanliness of a church building and grounds, including tasks like cleaning interior spaces, performing minor repairs, landscaping, managing the church's exterior appearance, and ensuring the building is prepared for services and events, essentially acting as the custodian of the church property; tasks like opening and closing the church, managing security systems, and occasionally interacting with visitors and congregation members.
Key responsibilities of a church sexton:
Building Maintenance:
- Daily cleaning of interior spaces like pews, floors, restrooms, and common areas
- Performing minor repairs like light carpentry, plumbing fixes, and electrical troubleshooting
- Maintaining and cleaning church furniture and equipment Inspecting for general and specific (solar inverters, furnace and sub pump operations, alarm systems) maintenance issues and act to repair/report them to the appropriate parties
- Ensuring / ordering inventory of products under realm of responsibility are available as needed
- Grounds Maintenance:
- Light hedge trimming, weeding, and planting flowers
- Light snow removal and salt application
- Maintaining outdoor lighting and landscaping features
- Trash removal
Event Preparation:
- Setting up chairs, tables, for services, and Sunday coffee hour
- Preparing the sanctuary for regular and special worship services
- Preparing church for special events such as plays and concerts
- Opening, closing and securing the church building as needed
- Security and Safety:
- Monitoring security systems and ensuring the building is properly locked
- Responding to emergencies and reporting issues
- Interaction with Church Community:
- Greeting visitors and providing basic information about the church
- Assisting with set-up for church events and activities
- Maintaining positive relationships with congregation members
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Capability to perform manual labor including lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders, and working outdoors in various weather conditions
Basic maintenance skills:
- Knowledge of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and general cleaning techniques
Attention to detail:
- Ability to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and presentation in the church building
Reliability and punctuality:
