Position:  Teacher (Elementary AIG)

 

Terms of Contract:  10 months, full-time, benefit eligible

 

Location:  St. James Elementary School

Reports To:  Principal

Monthly Salary:  Teacher State Salary Schedule (plus local supplement)

 

FLSA:  EXEMPT

 

Qualifications/Requirements:  Must hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina teaching license in the appropriate licensure area. AIG license (Area 88087) preferred.

 

Goal:  To develop in each pupil skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship; to develop appreciation of good literature of all types; to motivate pupils to read widely for information and recreation; to develop standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media; and to discover and develop special talents of pupils in the field of English.

 

Duties:

  • K-3 Nurturing Program
  • Provide AIG services to identified elementary school students as needed during the year
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current trends and practices relating to effective AIG teaching practices
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of differentiation strategies and practices related to effective AIG instruction
  • Demonstrate knowledge of opportunities and resources available to AIG students
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the mental, social, and emotional needs of AIG students
  • Provide appropriate support for regular classroom teachers
  • Collaborate with other AIG teachers in planning and implementing district-wide ACE days
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
  • Gather, organize, monitor, and keep accurate and complete data,  and submit reports in a timely manner
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy with students
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with AIG students, co-workers, staff, administrators, parents, and the community
  • Teach content and skills in English language, literature, composition, reading, and journalism to secondary pupils, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district
  • Adapt English material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge pupils
  • Select and requisition books and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity level of pupils; maintain required inventory records
  • Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions based on a variety of mass media and classical and contemporary literature
  • Encourage pupils to think independently and to express original ideas
  • Evaluate each pupil’s progress in English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing)
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day
  • Work with pupils and other classroom teachers in such activities as preparing material for the school newspaper or yearbook, assisting with PTA programs, or coordinating entries in essay contests
  • Administer or monitor group tests
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs
  • Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities
  • Must be able to perform heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of forces frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects
  • Other duties as assigned
