Job Summary
The Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for reviewing lab orders and accurately entering them into the laboratory information system (LIS). The position involves collecting blood and urine samples from patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Orders lab tests accurately in the LIS computer system.
- Receives lab samples in the LIS computer system for processing.
- Distributes lab samples to the appropriate lab area.
- Collects drug screens using the correct form and generates the correct charge.
- Labels and handles lab specimens properly.
- Performs venipuncture to obtain blood samples using appropriate equipment, adjusting to patient age. Two identifiers are used to identify the patient when collecting samples.
- Conducts off-site venipuncture collections.
- Maintains the phlebotomy area, ensuring it is well-stocked with supplies. Monitors inventory and submits requests for supply orders to Materials Management.
- Answers phone calls with proper phone courtesy.
- Maintains an organized and clean working area with well-stocked supplies.
- Resolves problems with lab samples and test reports by looking up patients in the LIS computer system and faxing to the proper personnel.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Certificate of completion of a certified Phlebotomy course preferred.
- Eligible for employment upon graduation; prefer 6 months' experience.
- Certified as a Phlebotomist preferred.
- Current BLS certification.
- Variety of shifts, including weekends, available.
