Job Responsibilities

General Responsibility

Standardized patients are part of the instructional team for the Wegmans School of Pharmacy in helping students learn and develop key communication skills required for a pharmacist. The main responsibility of this position is to portray all the characteristics of a real patient, simulating signs and symptoms of presenting condition(s) in the case scenario you will be provided by the faculty. Standardized patients (SP) will be required to assess student behaviors using standardized measurement tools. SPs will be required to provide verbal and written feedback to students discussing the efficacy of student communication skills, interpersonal skills, and patient education skills. SPs will participate in group training and / or mentorship of entry-level standardized patients.

Specific Tasks

  • Be highly dependable and punctual
  • Demonstrate flexibility and reliability with scheduling and assignments
  • Follow written and verbal instruction
  • Provide constructive feedback to students, both written and verbal as needed
  • Simulate all aspects of scenarios, including history of current problem in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner
  • Accurately and consistently complete a rubric (ie grading tool) for the student
  • Accept ongoing feedback from facilitators and incorporate into case simulation
  • Be willing to be audio and videotaped during simulations
  • Comfortable using and / or learning various forms of technology

o iPad for grading

o Zoom when virtual sessions are required.

o Internet use for grading and uploading videos for virtual sessions

  • Maintains confidentiality of all student specific information and any information related to cases, student behaviors, and feedback evaluations
  • Ideally, SPs should be able to work both on campus and virtually, however some exceptions may apply.

    Minimum Job Requirements

    Standardized Patients must meet the standards as set forth in the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (see below) and be able to meet the criteria stated in the Specific Tasks Section .

    As cases may be virtual, SPs need to have access to a laptop / computer with camera / video capability, as well as reliable internet access.

  • Ability to recall and accurately score student behaviors
  • Ability to accurately and convincingly portray a specific character as trained
  • Ability to work flexible hours on a scheduled on-call basis
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of case and student information
  • Ability to recall case information, as cued by students in a role-play situation
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to use various forms of technology with ease after training
  • Availability for both training and event sessions
  • Must possess strong communication skills, both written and spoken. Must have strong reading and writing skills to absorb and use the detailed case training and exam procedural information. Must have excellent recall of learner performance. Attention to detail is essential.

    Work Hours

    Sessions are scheduled based on students' schedules and may be weekdays or weekends. Opportunities exist during the fall and spring semesters and there is an average of 5-10 sessions per semester. SJFC Standardized Patient Coordinator will reach out to the SPs when opportunities exist and the SP may participate in the session or not, depending on their availability. Typically, SPs will be utilized for approximately day (3-5hrs) but may be asked to participate in all-day (5-8hrs) programs. Training sessions are held prior to curricular programming and are typically of 2-hour duration. Dates are provided as far in advance as possible.
