Director of Communications Job Description
St. John’s Episcopal Church in Barrington, RI is looking for a Director of Communications to promote its ministries, programs, and events to the parish, the diocese, and the wider community. This is a part-time position.
Reports to: The Rev. Patrick Greene, Rector
Location: 191 County Rd, Barrington, RI
Salary: $20-23 per hour, depending on experience.
Work hours: Approximately 8-12 hours per week.
Purpose:
The Director of Communications at St. John’s Episcopal Church is responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy for St. John’s Episcopal Church. Working with the professional staff, the vestry and lay leaders, the Director of Communications will support St. John’s mission by promoting its ministries, programs, and events to the parish, the diocese, and the wider community through a variety of communications channels, both print and electronic.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Manage, design and create all regular parish-wide communications – printed and electronic – as well as externally distributed communications pieces. Work with volunteers to produce any publications not produced by staff. Oversee proper use of style guide and branding. Current regular publications include our monthly newsletter, “The Tower” and a weekly e-blast.
2. Develop a strategy to increase the church’s visibility within the Barrington and East Bay communities, including PR and developing relationships with diocesan, town and county media outlets.
3. Maintain St. John’s various physical bulletin boards and street banners.
4. Maintain St. John’s digital presence: website, social media, and listings on local and national church locators, bulletin boards and event pages.
5. Prepare and manage the annual communications department budget within approved guidelines.
6. Collaborate with staff and ministry leaders to support church ministries, programs, activities, and events and provide guidance as needed on communications strategies, tools, and technology.
7. Work as part of the office team to keep the church running smoothly, including attending weekly staff meetings and sharing in administrative duties such answering phones, responding to emails and greeting visitors.
8. Coordinate with St. John’s staff and lay leaders to develop a crisis communications process.
9. Attend church communications conferences to support learning and implementation of best practice in communications.
Required skills:
v Excellent computer skills including all Office programs, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, digital marketing software (Constant Contact or other)
v Professional expertise with social media and web resources
v Above average design skills
v Excellent communication skills—verbal and written communication
v BA degree in English, marketing or communications or equivalent professional experience in the communications field
v Familiarity with faith-based organizations, and with the Episcopal Church is a plus
