Role of the High School English Teacher
Saint John’s High School seeks a full-time English teacher in grades 9-12 with a passion for teaching and a love of literature. We value diversity in backgrounds and in experiences and look for candidates who are knowledgeable in their field, caring and compassionate, and ready to work with all of our students, teachers, and staff.
Candidates should have a strong background in education, a commitment to and understanding of adolescent boys in the classroom, the ability to utilize technology to enhance student learning, and the drive to engage in ongoing professional development.
The ideal candidate is excited to guide our students as they consider essential life questions through the lens of literature. In addition, we seek a teacher with a passion for reaching learners of all ability levels. This educator appreciates the teachable moment when moral and ethical questions arise and fosters communication and collaboration among students and colleagues alike. We seek a candidate
committed to lifelong learning who will nurture a growth mindset in students. In addition to the classroom responsibilities, teachers at Saint John’s serve as homeroom teachers – meeting daily with a group of students – and often take on the responsibility of overseeing clubs or other extracurricular activities. The ideal candidate has the desire to contribute to the school community by sharing his or her passions and through these additional efforts, such as coaching teams, directing clubs, or supervising activities. In addition to enthusiasm, integrity, and intellectual curiosity, we seek a teacher committed to an inclusive school community.
The teacher will be responsible for the implementation of curricula, designing assessments that measure student progress and achievement, using assessment data to inform instructional practices,
and participating in collaborative activities. Experience teaching rhetoric and writing skills and/or Advanced Placement Language and Composition is preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
● An undergraduate degree in English (a Master’s preferred).
● Teaching experience on the High School level.
● Ability to articulate effectively the values and mission of Saint John’s High School and the Xaverian Brothers.
● Commitment to Catholic education.
● Knowledge of contemporary educational issues, topics, and trends.
● Facility and high comfort level with educational technology tools; experience incorporating educational technology into the classroom.
● Dedication to partnering collaboratively with a team of talented faculty.
● Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
● Skilled in navigating the Google Suite of applications (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, etc.)
● A proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is required. ● Experience teaching AP Language and Composition is a plus.
