What are the responsibilities and job description for the Security position at St. John's Ministries?
Our Security Staff are a necessary component of our ability to provide a safe, comfortable environment for shelter guests, staff and volunteers.
Shifts are available at both (Men/Women) shelters. Shifts for this position are 4-10:30pm, 4pm-12am and 11:30pm-9am seven days a week. (Shift differential for overnight shifts) Minimum of one shift per week.
The essential functions of Security Staff include:
- Performing checks of guests and their belongings as they present to shelter.
- Screening guests for self-care. We do not require our guests to be completely sober to stay with us. However, they are expected to be able to take care of themselves: walk without staggering, clean up after themselves, be respectful, etc. It is security staff’s responsibility to determine whether a guest can do so before allowing the guest entry.
- Performing routine checks of the shelter and shelter grounds.
- Monitoring guest behavior. Recognizing and deescalating potentially threatening situations.
- Communicating guest issues to the Shift Lead.
- Writing clear and descriptive notes regarding guest issues.
- Engaging and building rapport with shelter guests.
- Completing other tasks as needed.
Necessary Skills
- Experience working with low-income individuals, mental health and substance abuse issues preferred, but not required
- A strong desire to serve others in the community
- A positive attitude
- A calm demeanor when dealing with challenging personalities
- Responsibility to present for your assigned shifts, or to find coverage if you cannot
- Ability to work well as a member of a team
- Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities
- Initiative to address issues that may arise
