The St. John the Baptist Parish Public Library in Louisiana seeks a Library Assistant for one of our libraries in LaPlace, Reserve, Garyville or Edgard. This position will be part of a future focused Library System based on a Community Led Services Philosophy. The position provides front-line service to the public and must be prepared for the variety of demands and personalities encountered.
The Library Assistant performs a wide range of clerical duties and contributes to the efficient daily operations of the library, working any hours that the library is open, including evenings and weekends.
The preferred candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills. This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position with benefits. Work hours require one evening a week and alternating weekends.
Examples of Duties:

Provide customer service to patrons in person, by telephone and email. This includes registering borrowers and maintaining patron records accurately.
Ability to explain library policies and services to all patrons.
Assist customers with using copiers/ scanners / and fax machines.
Assist customers with computers (library catalog, internet, word processing and MS Office suite)
Collect money for fines and fees as required.
Prepare the building and equipment for opening and closing.
Accurately sort and shelve books and other materials using the alphabet and Dewey Decimal System.
Contribute to program and event planning and presentation incluidng craft / art projects.
Follows the policies and procedures of the library system.
Assists with system-wide decision making by serving on committees and participating in strategic initiatives.
Participates in opportunities for professional development.
Participates in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for library users and fellow staff members.
All other duties as assigned.

- Ability to perform a wide variety of multi-step procedures.

- Ability to handle confidential/ sensitive information with discretion, tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
- Interest in planning and preparing library programs for various ages.
Supervision
Reports to the Branch Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent plus at least one year of college or post secondary education. Possess clerical skills including keyboarding skills. Ability to understand the basic routines of library operations. Ability to lift 30 pounds.
